Hawks Walk-Off in Lynx Season Finale

LEICESTER, Mass. –Becker rallied after trailing 4-0 to beat visiting Lesley University, 5-4, in NECC baseball action at Rochdale Park. Senior center fielder Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.) won it in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out RBI walk-off single to deep left field to drive in junior third baseman Mike Smith (Warner, N.H.). The Hawks of Becker are now 11-23 and 9-9 against conference opponents while the Lynx finish off their season at 13-17 and 6-12 in the NECC.

Down 4-0 headed into the bottom of the fifth, Becker never forgot to finish strong. Tompkins finished two for five with two RBI, have also tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. Senior right fielder Eric Lajoie (Oakham, Mass.) went two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored. Smith hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left that scored junior catcher Shaun Millerick (Hampton, N.H.), who finished the day with a hit and a run scored. Senior shortstop Tony D'Addio (West Haven, Conn.) scored Becker's first run in the bottom of the fifth, going one-for-three on the day. Junior pitcher Tony Cantalupo (DePere, Wisc.) earned the win in relief, giving the Hawks three shutout innings and striking out three Lynx. Senior pitcher Ben Keough (Attleboro, Mass.) pitched a scoreless sixth for Becker, with two strikeouts. Senior pitcher Mike Schoen (Yorktown, N.Y.) started the game, going five innings.

For the Lynx, junior first baseman Kevin Hopwood (Winter Haven, Fla.) went two-for-three, driving in two runs and tallying one walk and a run scored. Hopwood's second RBI came in the top of the fifth to put Lesley up 4-0. Senior shortstop Aqib Shah (Watertown, Mass.) went two-for-three, while senior third baseman Joseph Santos (Springfield, Mass.) went two-for-two with a run scored and a walk. Junior right fielder Tyler Plourd (Canton, Conn.) had a hit and an RBI ground-out in the top of the fifth. Sophomore pitcher John Gosnell (Toronto, Calif.) pitched seven strong innings in the start, striking out four. Gosnell did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Sophomore relief pitcher Matt Gianoni (Berlin, Conn.) struck out two in one and two-thirds innings.

Lesley finishes their season with a program-record 13 wins, breaking their previous record of eight as they did during last season's campaign.

The Lynx continued to re-write their record books of their early history, as several players added their name to the prestigious list.

Sophomore Rob Parson (Commack, N.Y.) set program marks with 112 at bats, 28 runs scored, 39 hits, while tying his previous mark of 11 stolen bases set in 2012.

Plourd's 24 RBI breaks his own record of 17 that he shared with Shah while sophomore catcher David Hersey (Wolfeboro, N.H.) set a new program record with a .476 slugging percentage.

Sophomore Ray Cohen (Coventry, Conn.) set a new program mark compiling a 2.86 earned-run average and matching the team record with three wins.
