Cohen Shines as Lynx Split Doubleheader with DWC

Smithfield, R.I. – Ray Cohen (Coventry, Conn.)  went the distance, allowing just one run, leading the Lynx to salvage a split in a twin bill against Daniel Webster College with a 6-1 game two victory this afternoon at Conaty Park at Bryant University. The win was their first over the Eagles in program history. DWC Junior Ariel Ramos (Lowell, Mass.)tossed 5.1 innings, striking out six, to earn the win in the afternoon's first game, 5-4.

In the first game, the Eagles started the scoring in the top half of the second when senior Josh Chasse (Haverhill, Mass.) singled in classmate Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, R.I.), who reached on a single to right field and then stole second.

The Lynx grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when they got two RBI singles from Cohen and junior Tyler Plourd (Canton, Conn.).

Daniel Webster loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth when the first two batters reached on errors and Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, N.H.) singled to right field. Lesley starter Ryan Genua (Prospect, Conn.) escaped, giving up just one run on a Lizotte sacrifice fly, and got out of the inning with a shallow fly ball to right field and a groundout.

With one out in the top of the fifth, the Eagles loaded the bases again after two walks and a single. Genua struck out Kyle Bourdeau (Alton Bay, N.H.) for the second out of the inning, and nearly got out unscathed before Bonin cleared the bases with a double with two-strikes on him, giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead.

The Lynx got one back in bottom of the inning when Cohen knocked in his second RBI of the game with a double to right-center that allowed junior Kevin Hopwood (Winter Haven, Fla.) to come around to score.

Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Lynx loaded the bases with just one out. Adam Ciampi (Westford, Mass.) recorded an RBI when he got hit by a pitch with the bases juiced, cutting the Daniel Webster lead to 5-4. Lesley appeared to get the game-tying run across, but Plourd was called out on a bang-bang play at first to complete a 4-6-3 that ended the inning and the Lesley threat.

Ramos improved his record to 2-1 on the year while senior Greg Debula (Stratham, N.H.) came in to close things out, earning his second save of the season.

Genua, who fell to 1-1, went the distance for Lesley, giving up five runs (four earned) while striking out six.

In the second game, the Lesley bats got to work right away as they pushed the game's first run across in the bottom of the first. After Rob Parson (Commack, N.Y.) lead off the inning with a double to right-center, Hopwood ripped a single up the middle to give Lesley an early 1-0 lead.

The Lynx added two more in the third when Parson and Plourd each had singles to knock in runs.

That would be all Cohen would need as he was able to get into a good rhythm early. Cohen held the Eagles scoreless over the first five innings and yielded just a single run in the sixth when Boudreau hit a two-out single to knock in sophomore Kyle Brigham (Hudson, N.H.). Cohen limited the Daniel Webster bats to just seven singles in the complete-game effort while striking out five.

Lesley would add two more runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth as insurance as they cruised to a 6-1 victory.

Parson was great in the lead-off position for the Lynx as he finished game-two going 3-4 with a double, a walk, and four runs scored.

Daniel Webster entered the game with a 6-0 record against the Lynx, outscoring Lesley 63-7 in those games.

The Lynx take the field again on Tuesday, April 2nd when they host Gordon College at 6:00p in non-conference action. Daniel Webster will travel to Plymouth State on Wednesday, April 3rd. First pitch is slated for 4:00p.
