Four-run eighth lifts Mountaineers over Lynx

BENNINGTON, VT -- Southern Vermont scored four in the fourth to take the lead and four in the bottom of the eighth to retake it for good in the Mountaineers 9-5 win over the Lynx Sunday afternoon.

Lesley's Ray Cohen went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI's, including his first career home run, and Robert Parson went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Peter Plansky's second home run in as many days got the Lynx on the board in the second, and Lesley took a 3-1 lead in the third on a John Gosnell single that scored Tyler Plourd.

The Mountaineers broke through for four runs on three hits in the sixth. Three straight singles and a Corey Armstrong RBI groundout put Southern Vermont on top 5-3, but Cohen's two-run homer tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth.

In the eighth, the Mountaineers put runners at the corners with one out off Lynx starter Ryan Genua, who gave way to Cohen on in relief. Cohen was greeted with a two-run Armstrong double, and a Cody LaBadia double scored two more as Southern Vermont went ahead 9-5.

Lesley put two on in the ninth, but Dave Northup struck out Gosnell to end it. He pitched 3 and 1/3 innings in picking up the win, striking out three, walking one and allowing only one hit.

Genua went 7 and 2/3, allowing five earned runs, walking six and striking out two in taking the loss.

The Lynx return to play on Tuesday night at 7:00 at Emerson.
