Lynx take early lead but Amcats power past Lesley 13-5

WORCESTER, MA -- Lesley took an early 5-1 lead on Great Northeast Athletic Conference power Anna Maria, but the Amcats stormed back by scoring runs in the first seven innings to top the Lynx 13-5 in non-conference baseball play.

Lesley shortstop Aqib Shah went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's, and catcher Joe Muratore went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

For a second straight day, the Lynx took a lead on the strength of a five-run inning, plating a handful in the second to take a 5-1 lead on Monday. Two RBI fielder's choice groundballs, an RBI single from freshman Muratore and a Shah two-run double, his team-leading fourth, gave the visitors a sizable lead behind starter John Gosnell.

Anna Maria, the defending ECAC Champions, bent but didn't break the freshman starter, at least until the fifth. The Amcats built a fence of four straight one-run innings and finally broke through with three runs on a hit and two errors to take a 7-5 lead after five.

With two outs, Kevin Woodatch bounced a two-run single up the middle, scoring two unearned runs to give Anna Maria the lead for good.

The Amcats tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh, making it a 9-5 game. After the Lynx five-run second, the team's bats went silent, managing only one hit through the next seven innings off Woodatch and reliever Lucas Davis. Anna Maria, meanwhile, dropped three more runs on reliever Nick Dolan in the seventh on a pair of RBI singles and an RBI double, going on to win 13-5.

Gosnell finished up his day throwing 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs but only five earned, striking out three but allowing six walks.

At 3-11, Lesley returns to play on Wednesday at New England College.
