Shaw strikes out seven, but walks too much to overcome

SOMERVILLE, MA – Lesley University dropped the third game of its set with New England Collegiate Conference rival Daniel Webster, 6-1, Wednesday night at Trum Field.

Lefty Aaron Agrelo (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) hurled a two-hitter in picking up the victory, striking out seven and walking two. Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, NH/Campbell) went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for the Eagles (17-11, 8-6 NECC), and Bruce Brown (Lowell, MA/Lowell Tech) went 1-for-1 with three runs scored as Daniel Webster snapped a four-game slide.

For Lesley, Aqib Shah (Watertown, MA/Watertown) and Noah Shaw each went 1-for-3 in the loss.

An overcast night led to a dreary top of the first for the Lynx, with a pair of walks from starter Noah Shaw (Amston, CT/Leabanon) and a two throwing errors on pickoff plays – one a successful pickoff – leading to a pair of unearned runs.

Lesley loaded the bases with no outs off Agrello  in what looked like a promising bottom half of the first inning. Cleanup batter Jeff Gonzalez (Watertown, MA/Watertown) drove home his team-leading 11th run of the year on a deep sacrifice fly to center that advanced all three runners, but Agrello answered with consecutive strikeouts to keep the visitors up 2-1 after one.

Shaw's battled control problems again in the third, when three straight walks led to an RBI base on balls for Josh Chasse (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill), putting the Eagles ahead 3-1, still without the benefit of a hit after three innings.

Daniel Webster scored two more in the fifth inning, starting with a Bonin RBI single and adding another on a fielder's choice that made it a 5-1 game after five. The visitors scored one off reliever Nick Dolan (Strafford, NH/Bishop Brady) in the seventh for the 6-1 win.

Shaw went 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven and allowing only four hits, but his eight walks proved insurmountable.

Lesley starts its final series of the season on Saturday at home against Becker College at noon. Daniel Webster travels to Newbury on Friday.
