Mountaineers power past Lynx in two, 12-5 and 12-6

SOMERVILLE, MA – A pair of early homers in both game from Pat Warrington and Adam Northup lifted Southern Vermont in two road wins over Lesley University, 12-5 and 12-6, on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Trum Field.

Sophomore leadoff hitter Greg Anglin continued his hot hitting, going a combined 5-for-8 with three RBIs and a run scored for the Lynx.

Warrington (Folcroft, PA/Monsignor Bonner) crushed a two-run homer to center, and starting pitcher Northup (Richmond, RI/Chariho) helped his own cause with a solo shot to left field two batters later, giving the Mountaineers a brief 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

The lead didn't last. Lesley's biggest inning of the season saw four runs cross on four singles and three walks, with Aqib Shah (Watertown, MA/Watertown), Noah Shaw (Amston, CT/Lebanon) and Greg Anglin (Milton, MA/Milton) providing RBI singles that lifted the Lynx ahead 5-3.

After his rocky first, Lynx starter Jeff Landry (Vestal, NY/Vestal) settled down with a shut-down inning in which he framed two Mountaineers looking. In the third, though, Southern Vermont pulled to within 5-4 on Adam Northup's RBI double off the wall.

The Mountaineers took the lead two innings later, as Northup reached on an errant throw from Joseph Santos that allowed a run that opened the flood gates, as last night's hero, Dan Cook (Watervliet, NY/Watervliet) laced a two-run base hit to left. Andrew Morin then plated Cook all the way from first on an inside-the-park home run to center, leaving the Lynx trailing 10-5 after five unearned runs with two outs.

Southern Vermont tacked on a pair in the sixth to go up 12-5, which would be the final. Freshman left-hander Kurt Kowalczyk (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) picked up the win for the Mountaineers, striking out five in 5 1/3 innings, while Landry took the loss for the Lynx.

As the team did in Game 1, the Mountaineers flexed their muscles in the first inning with a pair of home runs of the second game. Warrington and Northup again provided the power, with Warrington blasting a three-run shot to left before Northup went deep to center, putting the Mountaineers up 4-0 after one.

Trailing 5-0 in the third, catcher Peter Plansky (Litchfield, NH/Campbell) put the Lynx on the board with a two-out RBI single to left that scored Ryan Genua (Prospect, CT/Woodland). Two batters later, Andrew Colon (Watertown, MA/Watertown) blooped a single to right scoring Jeff Gonzalez (Watertown, MA/Watertown) to pull the Lynx to within 5-2.

Both teams scored two in the fourth, Southern Vermont on a Northup sac fly and a fielder's choice from Cook. In the bottom of the inning, Lesley made it a 7-4 game on an Anglin RBI double that scored Nick Dolan (Strafford, NH/Bishop Brady) and Joseph Santos (Springfield, MA/Science Tech).

The Lynx pulled to within one in the fifth. A Santos run-scoring fielder's choice made it a 7-5 contest, and with Plansky on third base, Santos was caught in a hot box that allowed the runner to score from third to make it a 7-6 game.

The Mounties answered with three in the sixth and two in the third, with a Northup two-run double capping their 12-6 win.

Corey Armstrong picked up the win, going four innings and allowing six earned, while Anglin did the same over five innings in picking up the loss.

Lesley returns to action on Monday at Elms, while Southern Vermont travels to Williams on Wednesday.
