Early 7-0 hole too much for Lynx to overcome

SOMERVILLE, MA – Lesley University fell to visiting Lasell College, 12-3, Tuesday night in non-conference baseball play.

Lasell (16-10) starter Matt Mahoney (Abington, MA/Rockland) picked up the win, turning in seven innings of five-hit ball, allowing three runs and only one earned run in improving to 2-1 on 2011.

For the Lynx, third baseman Cory Ducharme went 1-for-3 with a run, and Ryan Genua added an RBI and a run in the loss.

The Lasers jumped on Lynx (0-13) starter Nick Dolan (Strafford, NH/Bishop Brady) for four runs in the second, starting with one run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Chris Williams (Hingham, MA/Hingham). Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT/Xavier) followed with an RBI single to left that made it 2-0, and an Aqib Shah (Watertown, MA/Watertown) throwing error plated two more, putting the visitors up 4-0 after two.

Lasell added three in the third with an RBI double off the bat of Christopher Pittman (Brockton, MA/Brockton), followed by an RBI double from Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA/Rockland). Another fielder's choice from Williams upped the Lasers lead to 7-0.

Lesley picked up two in the fifth on Jeff Gonzalez's (Watertown, MA/Watertown) team-leading sixth RBI, as the catcher singled home Genua (Prospect, CT/Woodland), who reached on an error and stole second. Pittman sent his pickoff throw from behind the plate that was intended for Gonzalez at first up the right field line, allowing Shah to score from second.

Mike Rocco's Lynx chipped away with another in the fifth. Ducharme (Keene, NH/Keene) singled to the opposite-field in left to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a Greg Anglin (Milton, MA/Milton) single and scored on a Genua RBI ground out.

A bases-loaded, none-out sac fly from Mike Mahoney closed the book on Dolan's first start at 13 hits, eight runs and a strikeout in his 5 1/3 innings, and Joseph Marcinko (Cranston, RI/East) came out of the pen to work out of the two-on, one-out, sixth-inning jam.

The Lasers tacked on two more in the seventh with a Pittman run-scoring fielder's choice and a Carlton Lentini (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington) RBI bloop single, then added two more in the ninth to seal the team's sixth win in a row, 12-3.

Both teams remain in non-conference play, as Lesley travels to Gordon College on Thursday, while the Lasers take on Becker College tomorrow.
