CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Lesley University senior Danielle Johnson (Waterford, Conn.) slammed down a match-high 15 kills to go with 14 digs to pace the Lynx attack in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-15) sweep over Suffolk University this evening at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. The win, which was the seventh consecutive for the hosts, propels the Lynx to 15-3 on the year while the Rams fall to 16-15.
Junior Melisa Randall (Fremont, Calif.) finished with seven kills and nine digs while freshmen Anni Abbruzzese (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.), Ciara Bruning (Centerville, Mass.), and junior Anthea Rathjens (Sudbury, Mass.) each chipped in with six kills. Junior Emily Marden (Fremont, Calif.) doled out a match-best 35 assists on the night while she also recorded eight digs on the defensive side.
Suffolk senior Katie Matatall (Danville, N.H.) drove the Rams with eight kills while digging out a team-best 13 balls. Junior Yabriela Perez (Dorchester, Mass.) finished with five kills and nine digs and freshman Krista Iacobucci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) recorded four kills and 11 digs. Senior Glamarys Sierra (Carolina, Puerto Rico) set up the Rams offense with a team-high 13 assists.
The Lynx held a distinct 41-20 advantage on kills while out-hitting the Rams .270 to .000.
Lesley trailed 11-10 in the first set before going on a 10-0 spurt to regain control 20-11. The Lynx rode the serve of Marden during the streak while Randall pitched in with three kills to power the offense.
Once again Suffolk jumped out to an early lead in the second set as a kill by Iacobucci put the Rams ahead 4-3. The lead did not last long, however, as the Lynx responded by scoring six in a row before closing out the set on a 22-4 run. Johnson led the attack as she recorded five kills in the set while Bruning finished with four.
The hosts continued their momentum in the third as they quickly pulled out to a 10-4 advantage before rolling to the 25-15 set win.
The Lynx will return to action on Thursday when they host Regis College in a battle for first place in the New England Collegiate Conference. First serve is set for 8:00p.
