Women's Volleyball Claws Past Lions in 3-0 Sweep

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Lesley University freshmen Anni Abbruzzese (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) and Ciara Bruning (Centerville, Mass.) combined for 24 kills to power the Lesley offense as the Lynx swept visiting Eastern Nazarene College 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 26-24) tonight in non-conference action at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. Abbruzzese slammed down 13 kills while Bruning swung .692 from the floor and finished with 11kills to give the hosts their second straight win as they improve to 10-3 on the season. With the loss, the Lions fall to 2-20.

Junior Melisa Randall (Fremont, Calif.) finished with a career-best seven aces on the night while classmate Emily Marden (Fremont, Calif.) set up the offense as she led all players with 24 assists to go with her 12 digs. Junior libero Danielle McDonald (Lilitz, Pa.) anchored the Lesley defense with 14 digs on the evening. Senior Danielle Johnson (Waterford, Conn.) chipped in with six kills on ten attempts for the hosts.

Leading the way for the Lions was junior Hannah Welsh (Derry, N.H.) who finished with nine kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Lauryl Berger (Laurel, Del.) dished out a team-best 18 assists on the night while senior Kortney Jenkins (Bunker Hill, W.V.) steadied the defense with 17 digs to go with her seven kills on the offense side.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the first set, Lesley went on a 15-5 run to open up a 20-10 advantage before rolling to the 25-16 set win. Abbruzzese and Bruning did most of the damage for the Lynx as they each connected for five kills in the set as the Lynx hit .306 from the floor.

The Lynx continued their momentum and rode the serve of Randall to open up a 6-0 edge to start the second. With Lesley holding a 20-14 lead later in the set, the Lions pulled to within one with a 5-0 spurt powered by Jenkins' serve. ENC's run was too little, too late as the Lynx answered with a 5-0 streak of their own to close out the set 25-19.

Lesley had to battle back to take the sweep in the third set. Trailing 24-23, the Lynx rattled off three points in a row, capped by an Abbruzzese kill, to take the 3-0 victory.

The Lynx will look to make it three in a row as they travel to Bay Path College on Saturday for a New England Collegiate Conference matchup with the Wildcats at 1:00p. ENC will return home on Saturday as they host Curry College at 11:00a.
