Women's Volleyball Drops Tight Match at DWC

NASHUA, N.H. – Rookie Samantha Betts (Rancho Cucamonga, Cal.) tallied match-highs of 10 kills and 17 digs, and fellow newcomer Madeline Roulier (Pittsfield, Mass.) added nine kills and nine digs helping host Daniel Webster open New England Collegiate Conference play with 3-0 victory over rival Lesley before 287 patrons on "Pack the Gym Night" Tuesday at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

Ally Hayden (Bedford, Mass.) added 21 assists and Maggie Belli (Miami, Fla.) notched 16 digs as the Eagles improved to 4-6 overall (1-0 NECC) and defeated the Lynx (4-8, 0-1 NECC) for the fifth time in their last six meetings with set scores of 27-25, 25-11, and 25-22.

Katrina Stroganoff (Cedar Grove, N.J.) paced the Lesley attack with nine kills while Danielle McDonald (Lilitz, Penn.) added five and Anthea Rathjens (Sudbury, Mass.) tallied four. Danielle Johnson (Waterford, Conn.) handed out 16 assists and pulled in 13 digs while Jessie Reynolds (Londonderry, N.H.) added 15 digs.

DWC survived despite finishing with only slight advantages in kills (25-24) assists (23-21) and digs (58-50). The difference was a difficult night at the net for the Lynx who hit -.026 while the Eagles managed .048.

The teams dueled throughout a back-and-forth opening set that saw 16 ties and seven lead changes with Roulier and Stroganoff leading their respective teams with four kills apiece. The Eagles held on despite hitting a miserable -.051 sand staved off deficits of 23-22 and set point at 25-24.

After a Vanessa Smith (Somersworth, N.H.) kill gave the Lynx that one-point lead, Christina Matos (Tampa, Fla.) answered with a kill down the line to tie it. Roulier went to the line scoring the final two points behind a Lynx attack error and a service ace for the two-point win.

DWC took control in the second, racing to leads of 6-0, 10-1, and 17-3 on the way to the 25-11 victory. Betts heated up to knock down six kills on 10 attempts and the Eagles helped hold Lesley to just five kills in the set.

The teams were more even in the third as Rathjens had four kills and Stroganoff three to keep things close while Roulier added four for DWC. The set was tied as late as 19 all after a Betts attacking error, but the Eagles were aided by two quick Lynx errors and a Betts ace for a 22-19 lead.

A Stroganoff kill closed the gap to 22-21 but another Roulier kill pushed it to match point and Sarah Durocher (Keene, N.H.) closed it out at 24-22 with her only kill of the night.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they visit Newbury for a NECC matchup at Noon and follow with a non-conference meeting with Potsdam State at 2:00 p.m.
