Women's Tennis Blanks Becker in NECC Opener

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Lesley University women's tennis team started their New England Collegiate Conference schedule off with a bang as they blanked Becker College 9-0 this afternoon. The Lynx improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in NECC play while the Hawks dip to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference action.

Reigning NECC Player of the Week Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and fellow junior Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) earned a victory in the top doubles match before freshman Maddie Abbott (Portland, Maine) and senior Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) cruised to an 8-1 triumph in the second doubles match. Senior Frances De Leon (Murrieta, Calif.) and sophomore Jessica Russo (Watertown, Mass.) made it a perfect 3-for-3 in doubles action with an 8-5 win at third doubles.

Kiddie put together a 6-1, 6-2 straight set win in top singles play while Abbott followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles. Barker blanked Jessica Leger 6-0, 6-0 in third singles before Pereira outlasted Dana Mahan 7-5, 6-2.

De Leon and Russo wrapped the afternoon up with 6-1, 6-1 victories at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

Lesley will return to the court next Tuesday at Regis College at 5:00p in a rematch of that past two NECC title matches. Becker will next head to Bay Path University on Saturday. First serve for that match is set for 2:00p.
