ENC Edges Women's Tennis in Season Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University women's tennis team had their season opener spoiled by Eastern Nazarene College as the Lions came back to earn a 5-4 victory in non-conference action this evening at the Nicholas Athletics Center.

The win is the first of the season for the visitor's as they move to 1-2 on the season while the Lynx start off their 2016 campaign at 0-1.

Lesley held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Senior Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) and freshman Maddie Abbott (Portland, Maine) teamed up for an 8-3 win in No. 2 doubles before senior Frances De Leon (Murrieta, Calif.) and sophomore Jessica Russo (Watertown, Mass.) earned an 8-3 triumph of their own at third doubles.

Eastern Nazarene got on the board as sophomores Adele Duval (Reading, Calif.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) downed Lesley juniors Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) 8-5 at the top doubles flight.

Duval earned her second victory of the night as she downed Kiddie in No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1 before Steelman followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Abbott in second singles. ENC freshman Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) outlasted De Leon in fourth singles 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 while Joanna Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) clinched the match for the Lions with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Courtney Goggin (Cheshire, Conn.) in No. 6 singles.

Lynx junior Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) earned a 6-0, 6-3 victory over senior Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.) in fifth singles while Barker came back to top Cressman in a two-and-a-half hour marathon match in third singles.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday as the Lynx travel to Albertus Magnus College at 1:00p while the Lions will head to Nichols College for an 11:00a start.
