Five players earn singles wins as Lynx sink Mariners

NEW LONDON, CT -- Five of six Lynx players recorded singles victories in a 7-2 triumph over Mitchell College in New England Collegiate Conference women's tennis action Thursday night.

Michelle Side, Katie Side, Nicole Smith, Brenna Donovan and Hagar Memlies were victorious in singles matches, with Memlies winning by forefit and everyone else winning in straight sets. It would have been a clean sweep for Lesley, but Becker's Mackenzie Flanagan outlasted Courtney Mullen 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) in a nip-and-tuck first singles match-up.

Four of six Lynx scored wins in doubles play, as well. The Side sisters recorded a 4-0 win due to a Mitchel injury mid-match, and the team of Smith and Donovan breezed through Caitlin Brown and Julie Embley for an 8-0 shutout. Mullen, meanwhile, was on the wrong side of luck in doubles play, falling 9-8 (7-4) to Flanagan and Kelly Walsh in a 90-minute marathon.

At 2-1 in in NECC play (3-1 overall), Lesley moves into a tied with Bay Path for second place in the league. Marty Morrissey's team looks to break that tie this weekend, playing host to the Wildcats on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Mitchell falls into a last-place ties with Newbury, with whom the Mariners square off on Saturday at noon.
