Turnbull, Rubin, Bessey Tabbed as 2017 Women's Soccer Captains

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Lesley University rising seniors Samantha Turnbull (Holtsville, N.Y)Karlie Rubin ( San Diego, Calif.), and rising junior Samantha Bessey (Algonquin, Ill.) have been selected as captains of the 2017 Women's Soccer team, as announced by head coach Paul Vasconcelos.

"From a leadership perspective our staff and team have been very impressed with Sam, Bessey and Karlie and have chosen these three as captains for the 2017 season," said Vasconcelos. "They bring a wide array of strengths and skills and will complement each other extremely well. Our coaching staff looks forward to working closely with these three over the next several months in preparation for another exciting season in Cambridge!"

Turnbull, comes back for a 2nd year as captain after serving as a tri-captain in the 2016 season. The Long Island native has started 41 of the 51 matches she's played in on the backline for the Lynx. Last season she was voted in as a NECC All-Conference First Team selection.

Rubin, played in all 22 matches and started 19 contests in 2016. Rubin enjoyed quite a junior campaign as she set career-highs with 11 goals, nine assists, and 31 total points from the center midfield position. Rubin was awarded 2nd team ALL-New England honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and voted to the NECC All-Conference First Team.

Bessey had a solid sophomore season with 11 goals and 3 assists which also garnered herNECC First Team honors. In her two seasons in Cambridge, Bessey has appeared in 42 games while scoring 18 goals and serving up six assists.

Lesley University women's soccer aims to go for an eleventh straight winning season and its sixth NECC title. The Lynx begin their 2017 campaign on September 1st at home against Eastern Nazarene.
