A Goal in Each Half Propels No. 8 Brandeis Past Women's Soccer

WALTHAM, Mass. — No. 8 Brandies University received a goal in each half by junior Samantha Schwartz (Highland Park, Ill.) to lead the Judges to a 2-0 victory over Lesley University in a non-conference affair tonight at Brandeis' Gordon Field. The Judges, the eighth-ranked team in the country, improve to 11-0-1 on the season while the Lynx fall to 7-4-2 overall.

The Lynx will look to get back in the win column when they return to New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday at Bay Path University at 2:00p. The Judges will also be back on the pitch on Saturday and host Case Western Reserve University at 11:00p.

Brandeis junior Haliana Burhans (Charlotte, Vt.) picked up the assist on Schwartz's first tally in the 20th minute when she slipped a pass through the Lynx defense allowing Schwartz to take a touch and aim a shot into the right side of the net in what proved to be the game-winner.

Schwartz would give the hosts an insurance marker in the 56th minute when she received a pass from senior Lea McDaniel (Phoenix, Ariz.) at the corner of the six-yard box and fired a shot through a screen and into the back of the net for her second marker of the match.

Lesley threatened in the opening minutes of the first half with a corner kick, but the cross from senior Julie Essick (Boerne, Texas) would be cleared by the Brandeis backline. In the 11th minute Essick would force Brandies goalkeeper Alexis Grossman (Syosset, N.Y.) to make a save and she blasted a right-footed attempt from 25 yards.

The Lynx would have a chance to cut the Brandeis lead in half in the 80th minute when senior Tori Ramirez (Redwood City, Calif.) raced down the right side of the box and released a shot with a defender on her shoulder, but her drive would sail right of the cage.

Each side finished with a pair of corner kick opportunities while the Judges held a 14-3 shot advantage over the Lynx.

Lesley junior keeper Lilly Donovan (Newburyport, Mass.) suffered the loss while making eight saves on the night.
