First Half Goal Carries Wellesley Past Women's Soccer

WELLESLEY, Mass. – A goal early on in the first half lifted Wellesley College over Lesley University on day two of the Babson Classic this afternoon on the Wellesley campus.

Wellesley junior Maddie Carlborg (Burbank, Calif.) scored the game's only goal at 13:05 of the first half to power the Blue to the win.

Wellesley improves to 2-0-0 with the result while the Lynx, who are in the midst of a four-match road trip, slip to 1-2-0 in 2015.

The Lynx opened the game with the majority of possession and a flurry of scoring opportunities. Lesley senior Hayley Wirth (Escondido, Calif.) got her head on a corner from junior Lindsey Bos (Valencia, Calif.) in the second minute but Blue keeper Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) corralled the attempt for her first of six saves on the day.

Lesley first year Kai Morehead (Oxnard, Calif.) followed Wirth's attempt In the sixth minute play, but her right footed blast sailed left of the cage to keep the match scoreless.

Four minutes later, Carlborg put Wellesley on the board with her second goal in as many games this season when junior Kyla Petrie (Denton, Texas) earned possession of the ball inside the attacking half of the field, before lofting the ball in the direction of Carlborg. Carlborg settled the bouncing ball and chipped the ball high over Lesley goalkeeper Jackie Berard (Coventry, R.I.) and into the back of the net.

Berard played the opening 45 minutes in goal for the Lynx, making a pair of saves. Sophomore Lilly Donovan (Newburyport, Mass.) came on to play the second half and turned aside one Wellesley shot.

The Lynx continued to press throughout the contest as they held a 12-8 advantage in shots on the day and a 6-4 edge on shots on goal in the contest.

Lesley will finish their four-game trip on Wednesday when they head to nearby Tufts University at 4:30p while Wellesley will return to the pitch next Saturday at 1:00p when they play host to New England College.
