Women's Soccer's Historic Season Comes to Close at NCAA's

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Lesley University's historic season came to close with a 1-0 loss to No. 8 Montclair State University this evening in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship First Round action at the MSU Soccer Complex. The Lynx, who advanced to their third straight NCAA Tournament following their fourth New England Collegiate Conference title, finish their season with an 18-4-0 mark.

The Red Hawks, who advanced past the First Round for the third straight season, improve to 18-1-2 in 2014 and will play the winner of No. 17 Connecticut College and Swarthmore College. Lesley's 18 wins ties a program record which was set in 2013.

Red Hawks senior Kaila Fasano (Westwood, N.J.) notched the only goal of the match in the 58th minute of play when she connected on a loose ball off a Montclair State corner kick to give the hosts a 1-0 lead that they would not surrender. Fasano's tally was her team-leading 14th of the season.

Lesley nearly jumped ahead with their best opportunity of the match with just under nine minutes to play in the first half when sophomore Lindsey Bos (Valencia, Calif.) sent a corner kick into the Montclair State box. Senior Jasmine Sanchez (Chino, Calif.) got her foot on the Bos volley, but her shot sailed wide of the cage as the two teams went into halftime scoreless.

Montclair State had a chance to add an insurance tally in the 66th minute when junior Janae Geonnetti (Mount Laurel, N.J.) sent a blast towards the Lynx goal, but Lesley keeper Jackie Berard (Coventry, R.I.) deflected the ball away for the save. The Lynx backline cleared the ensuing corner kick opportunity.

The Red Hawks controlled the balance of play as they outshot the Lynx by a 12-3 margin and held a 6-1 edge on corner kick opportunities.

Berard was superb in goal for the visitors, making four stops as she finishes her season with a 14-3-0 record.
