Women's Soccer Flies Past Falcons

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University women's soccer team won their second straight match with a resounding 4-0 win over Fitchburg State University in non-conference action this evening at Edward Field. With the victory, the Lynx improve to 9-3-0 on the season while the Falcons fall to 2-8-1.

Lesley dominated possession of the ball throughout most of the night and held a 14-5 edge in shots over their visitors while also holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Lynx freshman goalkeeper Lilly Donovan (Newburyport, Mass.) registered two saves as she improves to 2-1-1 on the year. Her counterpart, senior Kelsey Ford (Franconia, N.H.), was credited with four stops in the loss.

Lesley junior Hayley Wirth (Escondido, Calif.) put the Lynx on the board first in the 31st minute of play as she buried a ball off a free kick from senior Emily Johnston (Goldens Bridge, N.Y.). Johnston sent a ball into the box from midfield before Wirth settled the bouncing ball and deposited her first tally of the season to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.

Danyel Stone (Webster, Mass.) had the best opportunity for the Falcons in the opening half in the 43rd minute. The freshman forward got a step behind the Lynx backline and ripped a shot from the right side of the box, but Donovan was there to make the stop for the Lynx and as they carried the 1-0 lead into the break.

Lynx graduate student  Veronica Halen (San Diego, Calif.) provided Lesley's second goal of the night when she connected on a free kick from 20 yards out ten minutes into the second stanza. Halen's blast bounced off the far side post and into the back of the net for her second tally of the season.

Junior Samantha Rapant (Pittsfield, Mass.) buried her first of the year before senior Jasmine Sanchez (Chino, Calif.) found the back of the net for her second marker of the season to round out the scoring for the hosts.

Fitchburg nearly got on the board in the 71st minute of play as junior Jacqueline Walker (Derry, N.H.) sent a free kick into the box from just above midfield. Walker's volley found the foot of senior Nicole Green (Boylston, Mass.) who shot towards the lower left corner of the goal made Donovan make a diving stop to push the ball out of bounds. Lesley's defense held strong on the ensuing kickoff to keep the Falcons scoreless on the night.

The Lynx will be back in action on Saturday, October 11th as they play host to Daniel Webster College at 6:00p at Edward Field. The Falcons will also return to the pitch on Saturday as they will welcome Bridgewater State University to Fitchburg for a 10:00a start.
