Women's Soccer Retains Charles River Cup With 2-0 Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University women's soccer team will keep the Charles River Cup for another year as goals from seniors Alexis Giusti (Meridian, Calif.) and Cameron Brown (Marshfield, Mass.) lifted the Lynx to a 2-0 win over Emerson College tonight at Edward Field. The win marks a 3-0-0 record for Lesley in the history of the Charles River Cup as they improve to 6-2-0 in 2014. With the loss, Emerson falls to 3-5-0.

Giusti put the Lynx on the board first when she deposited her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 30th minute of action. Lynx junior Samantha Rapant (Pittsfield, Mass.) fought for a loose ball and tipped the ball to Giusti who beat the Lions keeper with a blast from the top of the box.

Emerson responded with a chance just one minute later when sophomore Natalie Benjamin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) sent a free kick from 25 yards out at the Lesley goal, but Lynx goalie Jackie Berard (Coventry, R.I) made a diving save to keep the visitors scoreless.

The score would remain 1-0 until Brown connected for her second tally of 2014 in the 82nd minute. The senior forward settled a bouncing ball on the right side of the box after a free kick from sophomore Lindsey Bos (Valencia, Calif.) and tucked a shot inside the near post to provide Lesley with the insurance goal. Bos was credited with her team-high third assist on the play.

Lesley held a slim 5-3 advantage in shots throughout the first 45-minutes of play, but maintained possession throughout the second half and fired nine shots while limiting the Lions to just two.

The Lynx also had the games only three corner kick opportunities.

Emerson keeper Allie Altman (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) made four saves in the loss while Berard was also credited with four stops on the night as she improves to 5-1-0 on the season.

The Lynx will open up New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday, September 27th when they head to Bennington, Vt. for a showdown with Southern Vermont College at 1:00p.
