Women's Soccer Opens NECC Play with Win Over SVC

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Lesley University women's soccer senior Casey Decareau (Haverhill, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winner just three minutes into the game, flicking a Veronica Halen (San Diego, Calif.) corner kick past the Southern Vermont College keeper as the Lynx rolled to a 3-0 win their New England College Conference (NECC) opener today at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. Lesley moves to 7-0-1 on and 1-0 in conference play while the Mountaineers fall to 0-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the NECC.

The goal would be the only tally of the opening half as the two teams played the rest of the 42 minutes scoreless. Southern Vermont's best chance was in the 15th minute when, after a Lesley foul, senior Jocelyn Ortega (Chula Vista, Calif.) launched a free kick that went wide of the Lynx goal.

The Lynx nearly gave themselves a 2-0 cushion heading into halftime when junior midfielder Alexis Giusti's (Meridian, Calif.) shot from the left side of the box rung off the near post. Sophomore Melinda Robinson (Plano, Tx.) settled the rebound, but her shot flew over the crossbar, leaving the Lesley lead at 1-0.

After the break, the Lynx dominated possession of the ball but failed to connect on their first 13 shots of the second half. Junior midfielder Hannah Landerholm (Edmonds. Wash.) finally added an insurance mark when she connected on a free kick from 30 yards out, netting her third goal of the season.

Freshman Morgan Zack (Bellevue, Wash.) would conclude the scoring on the afternoon when she knocked in a Lindsey Bos (Valencia, Calif.) corner kick in the 83rd minute to give the Lynx the 3-0 victory. The goal was Zack's second of the year.

Lesley outshot Southern Vermont 19-0 in the second half and 28-2 throughout the afternoon and held a 10-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Mountaineers goalie Katie Raymond (Bristol, Conn.) made twelve saves for the visitors while Lynx junior Emileigh Llyod (Middletown, Pa.) and senior Victoria Ellis (Laguna Beach, Calif.) split duty between the pipes for Lesley.

The Lynx will be back in action on Tuesday, September 24th when they travel to Middlebury College for a non-conference tilt starting at 4:00p while the Mountaineers will travel to SUNY Catskill on Wednesday for a 4:00p start.
