Freshmen lift Lesley to league win at Elms

CHICOPEE, MA -- Freshmen midfielders Sarah Bassett and Veronica Halen lifted Lesley to a 2-0 victory at Elms College Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer play.

For a second straight match, Paul Vasconcelos' club benefitted from an early goal. Bassett's first career goal put the Lynx on the board at 8:52, arching an attempt over goalkeeper Kelly Callahan, who ventured too far from the goal.

In spite of outshooting Elms 15-6, Lesley would cling to the narrowest of leads for most of the afternoon. Finally, with 28 seconds left in the contest, fellow frosh Veronica Halen beat Callahan and sent the Lynx to a 2-0 road triumph.

Lesley's Corinne Dasti earned her league-leading eighth shutout, making one save in the win.

The win puts the Lynx back on the right side of .500 after a four-match winless streak. At 5-4-2 overall and 1-0-1 in NECC play, the Lynx stay in conference play, traveling to Bay Path on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
