Lynx Slip Up at Becker

GAME OVERVIEW:

Cambridge, Mass- The Lesley Lynx fell victims to a heavy 22-point deficit from the Becker College Hawks in their conference clash on Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks were in a comfortable position at half-time as they led by 34-21. Becker now sits at 11-7 (7-3 in NECC) while Lesley slips to 3-14 and 3-6 in conference.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • A three-point jump shot from Linda Wallentine gave Lesley a slender 5-3 lead with 7:47 left in the first quarter. Wallentine was assisted by Dakota Jones who landed her side's first basket with a layup.
  • Becker went on a 11-point run with Adrianna Dowdy leading the charge with five points, consisting of two layups and one free throw.
  • Both teams only managed one further field goal apiece up to the end of the opening quarter. Abby Henderson recorded a jump shot for the Lynx while Cassidy Harrison made a lay-up for the home team who were now 16-7 clear.
  • Lesley's Elizabeth Portante made an encouraging start to the second quarter with a jump shot and a layup, scoring the layup after an offensive rebound. However, it was in defense that the Lynx were experiencing problems as fouls led to both Allie Ablondi and Avrie Bassingthwaite shooting a pair of free throws to make it 24-13 in the Hawks favor.
  • The margin increased to 34-21 by half-time as Becker's Katey Anderson displayed her shooting range with two three pointers.
  • With 6:47 left in the third quarter, a layup from Elizabeth Portante brought Lesley to within 10, 36-26, of the hosts. Ultimately, that proved to be the closest that Lesley got to their superior opponents for the rest of the game.
  • Following Theresa Pereira's three-point conversion for Lesley with 4:15 to go in the third quarter, Becker went on a 10-point run up to the sound of the buzzer. Jazlyn Contreras stood out for the Hawks with a three pointer and two free throws while also providing an assist for teammate Katey Anderson. Becker were 56-32 clear entering the final 10 minutes.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, Dakota Jones and senior Theresa Pereira did their utmost to make it a more respectable score-line as they helped the Lynx get within 18 points with 8:06 remaining.
  • However, the Hawks were by far the better team and this was emphasised as their last 12 points were provided by five different players.
  • The winners field goal percentage of 40.4% was only slightly better than Lesley's (39.2%).
  • It was the free throw percentage where the difference in quality was most evident. Becker converted 80% of their shots while Lesley landed only 33.3% of their free throws.
