Women's Basketball Falls to DWC in Season Finale

NASHUA, N.H. – Freshman Katherine Johnson (Manchester, N.H.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds leading host Daniel Webster College past Lesley University, 59-45 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) regular season finale for both clubs Thursday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium. The Eagles, who finished the year at 11-14 and an even 8-8 in conference play, will move on as the fifth-seed in the upcoming NECC Championship and travel to fourth-seeded Becker College in first round action. With the Loss, the Lynx finish the 2013-2014 season at 2-23 overall and 2-16 in league play. 

Ashley England (Old Town, Maine) added 12 points and six boards and Natalie Nagle (Dolgeville, N.Y.) notched 10 points and eight caroms as DWC snapped a three-game skid.

Senior Sarah Apgar (Andover, N.J.) notched 12 points and added nine rebounds with five assists and classmate Emily Fleming (Medford, Mass.) pulled down a game-best 14 boards for Lesley (2-23, 2-16 NECC). Junior Grace Amato (South Royalton, Vt.) added 11 rebounds for the visitors, scoring eight points. Ari Dimou (Manchester, N.H.) chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.

Every Eagle got into the scoring column as Ashley Giampetruzzi (Manchester, N.H.) chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds. Ariel Guzman (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Kaylee Free (Quincy, Mass.) added seven points apiece.

Both teams struggled from the field as DWC shot 27-percent to Lesley's 22-percent, leading to a combined 123 rebounds between the two squads (62-61, DWC). The Eagles finished with a helpful 26-14 scoring advantage in the paint and committed just six turnovers, grabbing nine steals.

The hosts held a 25-22 lead at the half and Lesley would forge a tie at 30-all after a Dimou three-pointer and Fleming free throw with 16:27 remaining.

DWC stormed back ahead by five behind back-to-back Johnson layups and after an Apgar jumper, before the Eagles took control with a 14-2 run over a 4:30 span sparked by three's from Guzman and Free pushing the lead to its largest (49-34) with 8:07 left.

An England trey upped it to 17 (52-35) with 6:06 left and Lesley pulled no closer than 10 down the stretch.
