Rivier Too Much for Women's Basketball in 2014 Opener

NASHUA, N.H. -- In their first game of 2014 the Rivier University Raiders captured their seventh victory of the season as they defeated the Lesley University Lynx by a score of 90-46 this afternoon at Muldoon Gymnasium. The victory improves Rivier's overall record to 7-2 and with the loss Lesley falls to 0-10.

The Raiders jumped out to an early 19-0 lead and would not look back for the rest of the game. Freshman Caitlyn Perry (Nashua, N.H.) led all scorers in the first half with 14 points off the bench. Junior Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) and freshman Savannah Butterfield (Londonderry, N.H.) contributed 9 points apiece to bring the Raiders to a 45-18 halftime lead. Purcell would finish with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The Raiders carried their momentum into the second half going on an 18-4 run out of the break. Senior Ryan Baker (Whitinsville, Mass.) set the pace for the Raider's offense with 8 points and two assists. Freshman Rebecca DeBaldo (Pelham, N.H.) came up big for the Raiders with 5 points and 7 rebounds before exiting with an apparent torso injury.  In the second half every Raider would score in what would be a complete team effort.

Lesley was led offensively by senior Sarah Apgar (Andover, N.J.) with 13 points and four rebounds. Apgar was aided by freshman Tara Coleman (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) with 8 points and 4 rebounds. Junior Grace Amato (South Royalton, Vt.) was solid for the visiting Lynx as she contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.

The Raiders return to the court on Thursday night when they will face the City College of New York Beavers at home in the Muldoon Gymnasium. The Lynx are scheduled to play next on Tuesday night when they will travel to Southern Vermont College.
