Wheaton Downs Women's Basketball in Season Opener

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College sophomore Alyssa Almario (West Orange, N.J.) came off the bench and knocked down five treys as the Lyons downed the Lynx 96-35 in the women's basketball season opener in the Cheryl Warren-Powers '95 Memorial Tournament at Emerson Gymnasium on the Wheaton College campus. Almario made five of Wheaton's ten three's on the night in a game in which they never trailed as they move to 1-0 on the year.

Junior Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah) chipped in with twelve points for the Lyons while Emily Romans (Easton, Mass.) and Sarah Fitzgerald (Bath, Me.) were also in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Kiley Shoemaker (Fayetteville, N.Y.) finished with nine points and nine boards while junior guard Laura Pierce (Hampstead, N.H.) paced the hosts with 10 assists.

Leading the way for the Lynx was junior guard Emily Fleming (Medford, Mass.) who was 6-10 from the field and finished with a team-high 14 points. Her counterpart in the backcourt, sophomore Jackie Ewing (Hong Kong), finished with twelve points. Freshman Belen Garcia-Clark (Bristol, Conn.) led the team with eight boards.

Wheaton's ball movement was excellent throughout the night as they assisted on 29 of their 35 field goals, leading to a 47-percent field goal percentage.

The Lyons were also strong on the defensive end, forcing 21 Lesley turnovers and holding the Lynx to a paltry 23-percent from the field. Wheaton also held a distinctive 56-32 rebound margin.

The Cheryl Warren-Powers '95 Memorial Tournament will continue tomorrow as the Lyons will take on the winner of the Trinity College v. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute matchup later this evening. The Lynx will battle it out with the loser of the match.
