Mariners Sweep Lynx in Final Meeting of the Season

Mariners Sweep Lynx in Final Meeting of the Season

GAME OVERVIEW:

NEW LONDON, CT. – The Lesley Lynx Softball team were swept by the Mitchell Mariners on Sunday afternoon, with the Mariners taking game one 7-1 and game two 5-0. The Lynx drop to 10-14 overall this season and 2-6 in the conference, while the Mariners move up to 15-17 and 4-4 in the NECC.

INSIDE GAME 1:

  • Mitchell got a quick run early, but then both teams went scoreless until the fourth inning. Brooke Whitmarsh drove in the first run of the day, linking up with Jenna Bennett for back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first.
  • Mariners starting pitcher Katelyn Lipsky helped herself out in the bottom of the fourth, reaching on a single and advancing to second on a throwing error that allowed Sydney Oatway to score.
  • Lesley cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth, as Jordan Day drove in Megan Murphy with a double. Murphy has been on a short hot streak, recording hits in five of her last ten at-bats to bring her average up to .257 in a strong rookie season.
  • After the Lynx picked up their run, it was all Mitchell. Sarah Aviles and Hannah Lemke both reached on errors that allowed runs to score in the bottom of the fifth and Madison Nicynski drove in another run with a double in the seventh. Nene Capeles followed her with a single that made it 7-1 Mitchell.
  • Lipsky picked up the win, going seven innings while allowing only five hits and one run. She struck out five Lynx and walked four. Samantha Mecklenburg went all six innings for the Lynx, allowing seven runs in the loss, though only five of them were earned.

INSIDE GAME 2:

  • The Mariners scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, giving Emily Reynolds all she would need in a complete game shut-out effort. Reynolds' ninth win of the season was a battle, as she allowed eleven hits and only struck out two batters, but her defense was able to keep the Lynx off the board.
  • All four of Mitchell's run scoring hits were singles in game two. Alex Lopez sent the first run home in the bottom of the first with a base hit to score Bennett, who drove in the second run in the second inning with a single to send Aviles home.
  • Nicynski added to a solid day with another two-run hit, this time a single to score Lopez and Whitmarsh. Whitmarsh then added an RBI of her own to drive in Gemma Landry for the fifth and final Mariners run.
  • Day took the loss on the mound, but had a nice 3-for-4 day at the plate. Murphy and Ilana Zack each had two hits as well; the first seven batters in the Lynx order did record at least one hit each, but they were never able to push a run across as Reynolds consistently got out of jams.

UP NEXT:
