GAME OVERVIEW:

REVERE, MA. – The Lesley Lynx Softball swept the New England College Pilgrims in an NECC conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 5-4 and walking off game 2 6-5. The Lynx move up to 10-8 on the season and 2-2 in the conference, while the Pilgrims fall to 7-12 and 1-3 in NECC play.

INSIDE GAME 1:

  • The Lynx put up a quick lead on the Pilgrims in game one. Mahlia Medina led off the bottom of the first with a double, advanced to third on a groundout by Megan Murphy, and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Day.
  • Lesley added a second run in the bottom of the second on Medina's 100th career hit. She sent a single to right field to bring Lindsey Jensen home and make the lead 2-0 Lynx. The third inning stretched the lead to 3-0, with Holly Swinamer driving in Day with a base hit.
  • Medina's third hit of the day made it 4-0, this time via an RBI double to score Jensen again. Murphy then reached on a fielder's choice and came across to score Lesley's fifth on a single by Day.
  • The Pilgrims finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth, with their first run coming on an error and their next two coming on a sacrifice fly that was followed by a throwing error. Jailen Dickens added one more on a groundout in the sixth inning, but Day shut down the comeback attempt to earn the win.
  • Day struck out seven in the win, her sixth of the season, allowing four runs (only one earned) on six hits. Emily Farone took the loss, going only four innings and allowing five runs.

INSIDE GAME 2:

  • The majority of game two was a pitcher's duel between Samantha Mecklenburg and Naomi Madrone, followed by Farone. Neither team scored until the sixth inning when NEC broke through with two runs. Daelyn Ross doubled to score Destiny Helmedach and then came across on a single by Destiny Cardona.
  • The Pilgrims put up three more runs in the top of the seventh and looked to have the game in the bag. Helmedach grounded out to third, but Emily Gagne was able to score and then the previous inning was practically repeated. Ross doubled to drive in a run and then again scored on a single by Cardona. Day relieved Mecklenburg to get the final two outs of the inning.
  • The Lynx came into the final half inning down 5-0 btu would not go quietly. Tara Eldredge led things off with a single to centerfield and Jensen drew a walk to follow her. Jess O'Neill came up with a huge double to drive in Eldredge and send Jensen to third for Lesley's first run.
  • Medina came up with another clutch at-bat, grounding out to shortstop but allowing Jensen to come in to score. With the NEC lead now 5-2, Murphy picked up a base hit to bring O'Neill home. For her 30th career home run and sixth of the season, Day sent a game-tying two-run bomb to right center.
  • Ilana Zack followed up Day's homer with a single and Antonia Kieran advanced her to second on a ground out, setting up Swinamer for the heroics. With two outs and Zack on second, Swinamer's opposite field single was enough to get the run home and give the Lynx the doubleheader sweep.
  • Day picked up her second win of the day after getting the last two outs of the seventh, while Farone took her second loss after coming in to relieve Madrone and giving up the big final inning.
