Medina Powers Lynx to Doubleheader Sweep of Hornets

GAME OVERVIEW:

REVERE, MA. – The Lesley Lynx Softball team won their fifth and sixth straight games on Sunday afternoon, winning both games of a doubleheader against the Northern Vermont-Lyndon Hornets by 10-2 scores. The Lynx advance to 6-4 overall this season, while the Badgers fall to 5-8.

INSIDE GAME 1:

  • Lesley did most of their damage in one inning in the first game, scoring eight times in the bottom of the third. Ilana Zack got the scoring started with a double to score Megan Murphy, then came around to score (followed closely by Antonia Kieran) as Sam Jensen reached on an error by Hornets third baseman Seairra Anderson.
  • Lindsey Jensen added two more from the Lynx on a two-run double and was followed by a bunt single by Tara Eldredge. Mahlia Medina then started her huge day with her first of two three-run home runs on the afternoon to make the score 8-0.
  • NVU got two back in the top of the fifth inning, with Emily Anderson reaching on an error to score Saleena Porter and then Lauren Siciliano coming home to score as Anderson stole third base.
  • With the bottom of the fifth now necessary to invoke the mercy rule, Zack and Kieran contributed back-to-back RBI singles to score Murphy and Jordan Day and end the game.
  • Outside of the two runs, Samantha Mecklenburg was nearly flawless on the mound. She allowed the two unearned runs and only two hits and one walk while striking out three batters for her third straight win. Medina finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Zack was 3-for-4 with two runs driven in.

INSIDE GAME 2:

  • The Lynx spread their damage out a little over the second game, but were playing from behind in their first at-bats. Claudia Knapp knocked a two-run homer off of Day in the first inning to put the Hornets up 2-0, but it would be all they would get off of Day.
  • Zack and Kieran again contributed runs to tie the game in the bottom of the first, with Zack singling to send Murphy to third and put her in position to score on a wild pitch. Kieran then hit a sac fly to allowed Jordan Day to score, but Zack was caught getting greedy at third for a double play.
  • Lesley added two more in the third inning on a home run by Day, her fourth of the year and school-record tying 28th of her career. Day now leads the NECC in batting average, homers, and runs batted in and is also top five in ERA and top three in wins and strikeouts on the mound.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Medina smashed another three-run homer to score herself and both Jensens to make the score 7-2 Lynx. Kieran picked up her second RBI of the game on a base hit to score Day later in the next inning, while Sam Jensen sent Zack home with a base hit and Holly Swinamer reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Kieran to score to end the game at the same score as the first.
