Goggin, Barker Power Lynx to Sweep of Wildcats

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior second baseman Courtney Goggin (Chesire, Conn.) drove in a career single-game high six RBI in an 18-1 win in game two against Wheelock College. Earlier in the day, the Lynx took the first game 25-1 as they swept the Wildcats, Saturday afternoon.

Senior third baseman Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) extended her hitting streak to 10 games after going seven-for-nine with eight RBI against the Wildcats. Additionally, the Southern California native has also reached base safely in 21 consecutive contests.

Lesley improves to 12-15 on the season including 9-2 in the conference while Wheelock drops to 1-25 and 1-11 in NECC action.

Game 1: Lesley 25, Wheelock 1

The Lynx wasted little time taking advantage of three Wildcat errors as they batted around in the bottom of the first inning to take a 6-0 lead.  They added to their lead pushing across another run the following inning to extend their lead to 7-0. It was more than enough for first year right-hander Sarah Bushman (Aurora, Colo.).

Despite giving up a lead-off walk to open the game, Bushman went on to retire the next 10 batters she faced including five by way of the strikeout. She received plenty of run support from her offense as the Lynx batted around three times in the bottom of the third to put up a crooked number 18 as she took a no-hitter into the fourth. However, Wheelock sophomore backstop Dominique DelBene (Peabody, Mass.) erased the no-hitter as well as the shut-out bid with solo shot to left to put the Wildcats on the scoreboard.

Sophomore shortstop Abby Henderson (Rochester, N.H.) tied a career single-game high driving in four base-runners while coming a homerun away from the cycle. Barker and junior centerfielder Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) also drove in four runners while first year Ally Murphy (Raynham, Mass.) plated three.

Bushman climbs back to .500 on the season improving to 6-6 tossing five innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out six. Wheelock senior right-hander Maggie Doyle (Kingston, Mass.) took the loss falling to 0-13 on the season after allowing eight earned runs on 19 hits over four innings.

Game 2: Lesley 18, Wheelock 1

Barker set the tone in game two launching her first homerun of the season as the Lynx batted around in the bottom of the first to take an early 7-0 lead. They did not look back as thy continued pour on the runs adding three in the second to extend their lead to 10. Lesley batted around once more in the third to push across another seven runs.

Coming a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, Barker was a perfect four-for-four with a single, double and homerun while driving in another four base-runners. Goggin led the way powering the bottom of the Lynx batting order going three-for-four – all doubles while clearing the bases in the process tallying six RBI.

Senior right-hander Alyson Nisbet (Clovis, Calif.) earned the victory tossing five innings allowing one run on six hits and striking out five to improve to 5-7 on the year. First year right-hander Hanna Gootee (Hampton, N.H.) took the loss dropping her to 1-5 on the season.

The Lynx return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for another NECC twin-bill against defending champion Becker College at 12:00 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
