Softball Cruises to Doubleheader Sweep of Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – Lesley University senior Selena Quezada (West Covina, Calif.) registered a combined five hits to lead the Lynx to a doubleheader sweep over Gordon College this afternoon in a non-conference affair. Lesley, winners of eight of their last nine games, improve to 17-11 on the season while the pair of losses drops the Fighting Scots to 10-21-1 overall.

The Lynx will play their sixth game in three days and return to New England Collegiate Conference play tomorrow as they battle Newbury College in a doubleheader on the Regis College campus at 5:00p. Gordon will be back in action on Friday with a doubleheader at Eastern Nazarene College at 3:00p.

Game One: Gordon 2, Lesley 8

Lynx junior Mekenzi Golden (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and freshman Abby Henderson (Rochester, N.H.) went back-to-back with homers in the bottom of the first as the visitors opened up a 3-0 lead. Golden's two-run shot was her third in as many series while Henderson registered her team-leading seventh round-tripper of the season.

Gordon would get one run back in the top of the second as senior Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.) laced a one-out triple and crossed the plate on an RBI single by freshman Kaelie Mercado (Granada Hills, Calif.).

The Scots would scratch across another run in the third to pull within one, 3-2, but the Lynx would answer back with a pair in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim a three-run edge. With runners on the corners and no outs, Quezada and junior Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) executed a double-steal that allowed Quezada to cross the plate before Henderson roped a run-scoring single to centerfield for her second RBI of the day.

Lesley would add a tri of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to stake an 8-2 lead. Senior Ashliegh Ramirez (Newport, Ore.) reached on an error in the Gordon infield that allowed classmate Sydney Thayer (Reading, Mass.) to cross the dish before a Stephanie Schofield (Redwood City, Calif.) ground out brought in Jordan Raab (Rochester, N.H.). Ramirez would later cross the plate to cap the scoring in the inning as the Lynx took advantage of the Scots second error of the inning and cruise to the 8-2 triumph.

Sophomore Kaera Wyse (Reading, Mass.) recorded her fourth win in as many starts with a complete-game effort, allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits and striking out six.

Game Two: Lesley 14, Gordon 2 (Final – 6 Innings)

The top four batters in the Lesley lineup provided much of the offense as they went a combined 9-for-15 with four doubles, one triple, eight runs scored, and 12 RBI.

Quezada led the charge going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored from atop the lineup while Barker added a pair of doubles, three RBI, and three runs. Golden added a double and a triple with four RBI and a run and Henderson finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored and one knocked in.

Ramirez ignited a seven-run top of the second with an RBI single before Quezada followed with a bases-loaded single that brought in a pair. Barker would record an RBI with a fielder's choice while Golden laced a two-run triple down the right field line before Henderson capped the rally with an RBI single to open up a 7-0 advantage for the Lynx.

Lesley would not look back as they added three more in the fourth and four in the fifth as they ran away for the 14-2 victory.

Junior Alyson Nisbet (Clovis, Calif.) earned the win, holding the Scots to just two runs while striking out seven.

Meenan supplied the offense for the hosts with a two-run homer to left-centerfield in the bottom of the fourth.
