Offense Stays Hot as Softball Sweeps Wheelock

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A day after scoring 29 runs on 20 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Southern Vermont College, the Lesley University offense stayed hot as they registered 27 runs on 26 hits in their second consecutive New England Collegiate Conference sweep of the weekend with a pair of wins over Wheelock College.

Lesley freshman Abby Henderson (Rochester, N.H.) connected for two home runs while junior Mekenzi Golden (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) blasted her third of the season in an 11-0 win in the opener before senior Selena Quezada (West Covina, Calif.) and junior Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) each racked up a trio of hits as the Lynx rolled to a 16-0 win in game two.

The Lynx – 9-1 in their last ten games – improve to 14-10 on the season and 11-1 in NECC play while the Wildcats fall to 4-16 overall and 3-9 in conference matchups. Lesley will take a break from NECC action with a non-conference doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene College at 5:00p on Tuesday while Wheelock will host Regis College in a Patriots Day matinee on Monday at 11:00a.

The Lynx got on the board early as Golden smashed a two-run shot to deep centerfield in the top of the first inning. The offense would remain in gear as they tacked on another run in the second and two more in the third with Henderson's solo charge and an RBI single from sophomore Courtney Goggin (Cheshire, Conn.).

Leading 5-0 after four inning, the Lynx would break the game open with a six-run fifth inning to close the opener by the run-rule. A Quezada fielder's choice brought home the first run of the inning before Barker followed with a two-run single. A Golden single to center would plate Barker from second and Henderson's second home run of the game capped the scoring as Lesley rolled to the 11-0 victory. Henderson leads the team with six home runs on the season.

Lynx righty Kaera Wyse (Reading, Mass.) registered the win, tossing five shutout innings, scattering four hits and one walk while striking out four.

Game Two: Lesley 16, Wheelock 0 (Final – 5 Innings)

Lesley would score early once again as a Sydney Thayer (Reading, Mass.) double scored Henderson in the top of the second before freshman Stephanie Schofield (Redwood City, Calif.) followed with a sacrifice-fly to give the guests a 2-0 lead.

The Lynx once again used a big inning to break the game open as they pushed across seven runs in the top of the third. Barker ignited the scoring charge with an RBI double to left-center while Golden followed with run-scoring double of her own. After an error in the Wildcats infield allowed the third run of the inning to score, senior Jess Reynolds (Londonderry, N.H.) and sophomore Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) both brought home runs with singles while Schofield would steal home as the Lynx extended their advantage to 9-0.

Lesley would add one more in the fourth before scoring six more in the fifth to run away with the 16-0 win.

Junior Alyson Nisbet (Clovis, Calif.) punched out four and allowed five hits in the five-inning, complete game shutout.
