Softball Tops Utica in Final Day of Sunshine State Trip

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Lesley University sophomore Kaera Wyse (Reading, Mass.) threw five innings of one-hit ball to lift the Lynx to a 1-0 victory over Utica College as the Lynx wrapped up their final day of play at the Rebel Spring games with a doubleheader split. After posting the shutout over the Pioneers, the Lynx fell 6-0 to #23 Cortland State.

Lesley will waste little time in getting into game action back up north as they open New England Collegiate Conference action on Saturday against Daniel Webster College at 12:00p on Buckingham Field.

Game One: Lesley 1, Utica 0
Box Score

Wyse was on cruise control as she only allowed three runners to reach (one error, one hit, one walk) through five innings of work while striking out three. The right-hander retired as many as ten in a row in the early innings.

Wyse gave way to Alyson Nisbet (Clovis, Calif.) in the sixth as the junior followed with two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

Pioneers starter Brittany Meka (Averill Park, N.Y.) limited the Lynx to two hits in four scoreless innings of work before Utica turned to the bullpen. Shannon Cool (Herkimer, N.Y.) relieved Meka and suffered the loss, yielding two hits, one run (unearned), and striking out a pair.

Lesley finally broke the scoreless tie in the fifth. Freshman Stephanie Schofield (Redwood City, Calif.) and senior Selena Quezada (West Covina, Calif.) ignited a two-out rally with back-to-back singles to give the Lynx runners on the corners. The Lynx would catch a break and take advantage of a Pioneers blunder as junior Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) would reach on an error that allowed Schofield to cross the plate for the only run of the game.

Game Two: #23 Cortland State 6, Lesley 0
Box Score

The Red Dragons, who were ranked #23 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Poll, wasted little time in getting on the board, pushing four runs across in the top of the first inning to stake a 4-0 lead.

That would be all Alexandrea Flint (Dalton, N.Y.) would need as the junior hurler earned her third win of the season with a two-hit shutout.

Quezada and sophomore Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) registered hits for the Lynx while Nisbet suffered the loss.
