Softball's Late Comeback Falls Short, Drop a Pair

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – A late Lesley University comeback bid fell short as Springfield College clipped the Lynx 6-5 in to kick off Lesley's second day of competition at the Rebel Spring Games. The Lynx followed that heartbreak with a 6-2 setback to Washington College in the second game of the day.

The Lynx will be off tomorrow and return on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall College at 9:00a and Ramapo College at 11:15a. Both games will be played at the Osceola County Softball Complex.

Game One: Lesley 5, Springfield 6
Box Score

After trailing by a score of 5-0, the Lynx bats finally got rolling in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Jessica Reynolds (Londonderry, N.H.) and sophomore Courtney Goggin (Cheshire, Conn.) led off with singles before freshman Stephanie Schofield (Redwood City, Calif.) knocked Lesley's third single of the inning to bring in Reynolds.

After sophomore Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) drew a walk to load the bases, senior Selena Quezada (West Covina, Calif.) brought in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice-fly to left, allowing Goggin to cross the plate. Junior Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) followed Quezada with an RBI single to right field to cap the scoring in the inning and cut the Pride lead to 5-3.

Springfield would go down in order in the bottom of the fifth and the momentum continued to swing in Lesley's favor. Reynolds would spark the offense once again as she reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch. Goggin followed with a walk before both came around on a Pride fielding error to even the game at 5-5.

The Lynx would threaten in the top of the seventh with a pair of runners on base with just one out, but freshman Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) got out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout.

Pride senior Jenna Webb (Harrison, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the seventh and was sacrificed over to second. With two outs in the inning, senior Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) laced a single past the diving first baseman to walk-off with a 6-5 win.

Game Two: Washington 6, Lesley 2
Box Score

The Shorewomen used two-out, run scoring singles in both the top of the first and second to stake an early 3-0 advantage before the Lynx would cut into the lead in the bottom half of the second.

Freshman Abby Henderson (Manchester, N.H.) led off with a double to right center and wasted little time in coming around as a Reynolds single coupled with an error in the Washington outfield put Lesley's first run on the board. The Lynx took advantage of another Shorewomen miscue, this time in the infield, as a throw to first on a Goggin sacrifice-bunt got away allowing Reynolds to score and cut the deficit to 3-2.

Washington would respond with one run in the third before adding a pair of late insurance runs in the top of the seventh to take the 6-2 win.

Reynolds finished 2-for-3 to extend her hitting streak to four games while Pereira also went 2-for-3 for the Lynx. Sophomore pitcher Kaera Wyse (Reading, Mass.) went 6.2 innings and struck out three while being charged with six runs.
