Offensive Explosion Leads Softball to Split at DWC

NASHUA, N.H. – After dropping the opening game 4-3, the Lesley University offense kicked into high gear as they exploded for a season-high 23 runs to top host Daniel Webster College 23-2 in the nightcap to earn the split on the day. The Eagles conclude their home schedule as they move to 5-19 overall and 3-13 in the NECC while the Lynx move to 13-14 overall and 10-4 in the conference.

Selena Quezada (West Covina, Calif.) sizzled all afternoon for the Lynx, finishing 8 for 9 with a home run in each game and scored seven runs all in the leadoff spot while knocking in six. Mekenzi Golden (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) combined to knock in four runs and was 3 for 8 overall with all three coming as doubles.

Game two marked the fifth time in program history that the Lynx have plated 23 or more runs in a game.

Game One: Lesley 3, Daniel Webster 4

The Eagles never trailed in the opener. Sarah Durocher (Keene, N.H.) put the hosts ahead, 1-0 in the first with a RBI single to score Abigail Goslin (Wrentham, Mass.), who also picked up two hits. DWC padded the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the third as Kayla Free (Quincy, Mass.) and Ashley England (Old Town, Maine) posted run-scoring singles.

Lesley chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth on a RBI single from Alyson Nisbet (Clovis, Cal.) and a Golden RBI double.

But the Eagles got the biggest run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Durocher connected for a two-out single and scored on England's double to right center.

Quezeda led off the top of the seventh with a solo shot to right, but the Lynx went in order the rest of the way as the Eagles hung on for the win.

Durocher allowed seven hits and three earned runs for the win, walking none. Nisbet took the loss, striking out seven as she falls to 4-6.

Game Two: Lesley 23, Daniel Webster 2 (5 innings)

In the nightcap Lesley put up two in the top of the first and DWC answered to tie it in the bottom of the frame, but Lesley followed with four unearned in the top of the second sparked by two Eagle miscues and then opened it up with a 10-spot in the third with eight runs unearned, again sparked by two Eagle errors.

The Lynx sent 14 batters to the plate in the third and Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) started the scoring when she drew a bases-loaded walk. A wild pitch brought home the second run before Golden smacked a run-scoring double to extend the Lesley lead to 10-2.

The Lynx were not done as they added three more runs on a fielder's choice, a passed ball, and another bases-loaded free pass before Quezada smashed a three run homer to right-centerfield to cap the scoring in the third.

Lesley would add two more runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth as they raced to the 23-2 blowout.

Quezada continued her torrid streak with a perfect 5-for-5 performance on the plate, knocking in five runs and scoring five more. The junior is hitting .709 (22-for-31) with 16 RBI and13 runs scored in her past seven games and extended her current hit streak to 12 games. Golden finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI while Kelsey Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Barker, Allison Fountain (Cheshire, Conn.), Courtney Goggin (Cheshire, Conn.), Nisbet, Jilliian Sbardella (Dartmouth, Mass.), and Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) each finished with a pair of hits for the Lynx as they tied their season-best mark with 20 hits.

England's double in the first accounted for both Eagle runs.

Lesley's Jordan Thomas (Fitchburg, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound as she improves to 3-5 in the circle. The lefty allowed two runs on five hits, striking out two.

Durocher took the loss allowing 14 runs (only seven earned), striking out four and walking three.

The Lynx will return to Cambridge for an NECC doubleheader with Becker College starting at 11a on Saturday while the Eagles close their season on Saturday with an NECC pair at Newbury that will be played at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
