Emerson Spoils Softball's Home Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Emerson College spoiled Lesley University's home opener as the Lions claimed an 8-1 victory over the Lynx in a non-conference matchup this afternoon at Buckingham Field. The Lions earned the sweep in the regular season two-game series as they improve to 11-14 on the year while the Lynx drop to 4-11 overall.

Emerson wasted little time in getting their offense in gear as freshman Jacqueline DeFusco (East Greenwich, R.I.) led off with a double before scoring as sophomore Antonia DePace (Philadelphia, Pa.) followed with a double of her own. After the Lynx recorded an out on a fly ball to center, freshman Jillian Gearin (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) registered the third double of the inning that plated DePace. The Lions scored their third run of the inning as sophomore Shelby Carney (North Reading, Mass.) reached on an error in the Lynx infield.

After the Lions added another run in the top of the second, the Lynx got on the board as they scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.) drove a double to deep left center before coming around on a single up the middle by freshman Kelsy Lynch (Rumford, R.I.).

The Lions added three more in the top of the fourth, two of which came on a two-run double in the right-centerfield gap by Gearin that scored Lyndi McIntyre (Wichita, Kan.) and DeFusco. Emerson capped their scoring with one run in the eighth.

Freshman Casey Tsamis (Colchester, Conn.) improved to 4-1 on the year as she earned the win for the Lions while junior Samantha Corey (Londonderry, N.H.) earned the save with three innings of relief. Tsamis allowed just one run on four hits while striking out one. Corey was equally as effective as she held the Lynx scoreless, yielding three hits and striking out three.

Gearin led the offense for the Lions, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored while DePace also finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run.

Barker led the Lesley attack as she went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored while senior Allison Fountain (Cheshire, Conn.) also picked up a pair of hits for the hosts. Lynch finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Lynx will continue non-conference play on Wednesday as they travel to Endicott College for a doubleheader with the Gulls at 3:00p.   The Lions will return to play on Wednesday as they travel to Wellesley College for a twin-bill starting at 3:00p.
