Softball Drops Pair to Keene State and Tufts

CLERMONT, Fla. – Lesley University had a tough task in front of them as their day two slate of the Dot Richardson Games featured a doubleheader with Keene State College and Tufts University, the former a 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifier and the latter the two-time defending National Champion. The Lynx found themselves on the losing end of both games, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Owls before falling 8-0 in five innings to the Jumbos this morning at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

The Lynx will be off tomorrow before returning to action on Wednesday as they face Western Connecticut State University, another 2014 NCAA Tournament participant, at 9:00a before squaring off with the University of New England at 11:00a. Both games will be played at the National Training Center.

Game One: Keene State College 3, Lesley 0

Keene State pitcher Mariah Crisp kept the Lesley bats off balance all game, allowing just one hit over the first four innings of play. The Lynx finally put together a two-out rally in the fifth inning as junior Selena Quezada (West Covina, Calif.) sparked the offense with a single to left field before sophomore Mekenzi Golden (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) smacked a double to centerfield. Senior Jodee Doka (Sacramento, Calif.) would draw a walk to load the bases, but Crisp got out of the jam, ending the inning with a pop-up to the short stop.

The Owls built their 3-0 lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh as they picked up their first win of the season.

Junior Jordan Thomas (Fitchburg, Mass.) pitched well for the Lynx, going the distance while yielding just six hits, one walk, and being charged with two earned runs.

Game Two: Lesley 0, Tufts 8 (Final – 5 innings)

The two-time defending National Champion Jumbos once again quieted the Lynx bats as they rolled to the 8-0 victory. Tufts hurler Erica County allowed just three hits while striking out five to earn her second victory of the spring.

Tufts opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as they received RBI doubles from Gracie Marshall and Michelle Cooprider before adding four runs in the bottom of the second to stake an early 6-0 lead.

Tufts would add one more run in the third before Cassie Ruscz knocked in Michelle Chisdak in the bottom of the fourth to give the Jumbos the 8-0 lead.

Golden, Carlyn Barker (Temecula, Calif.), and Kelsy Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) all had hits for the Lynx in the loss.
