Emerson Rallies in Sixth to Down Softball

BOSTON, Mass. – The Emerson College softball team used a three-run sixth inning to comeback and top Lesley University 4-2 last night in NCAA Division III softball action at Rotch Field last night. With the loss, the Lynx see their six-game winning streak come to an end and fall to 7-12 on the year. The Lions, winners of two of their last three, improve to an even 12-12.

The Lynx wasted little time and opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Senior backstop Allison Fountain (Cheshire, Conn.) led off the game with a double and crossed the dish on a two-out double by classmate Nicole Mercurio (Wakefield, Mass.) for the game's first run.

The score would remain in Lesley's favor until the bottom of the third. Emerson loaded the bases with one out before sophomore Courtney Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) delivered a single to left field to knot the score at 1-1. After another Lions single, Lynx left fielder Mekenzi Golden (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) gunned down a runner at the plate to keep the game a tie as Lesley escaped the jam.

The Lynx would reclaim a one-run edge in the top of the sixth inning when senior Maria Nazzaro (North Reading, Mass.) led off the inning with a triple in the left field gap. Fountain followed with a fly ball to right field, allowing Nazzaro to tag from third. Nazzaro dodged the tag at the plate with a creative slide as the Lynx took a 2-1 lead.

The lead would not last long as Emerson rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshmen Jenna Giannelli (Hudson, N.H.) and Monique Medina (Orange, Calif.) started the threat with consecutive one-out singles. The pair then scored following a double by sophomore Alexandra Wysota (Manhasset, N.Y.) as the Lions grabbed their first lead of the game. The hosts would add an insurance run in the inning to take a 4-2 edge.

Emerson starter Alicia Daniele (Mahwah, N.J.) retired Lesley in order in the top of the seventh as the Lions held on for the 4-2 win. Daniele was outstanding for the hosts, limiting the Lynx to just three hits as she picked up her ninth win of the season.

Lesley starter Allison Nisbet (Clovis, Calif.) pitched well for the Lynx in the loss, going the distance allowing 11 hits and four runs.

The Lynx will return to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Saturday when they host Southern Vermont College for a doubleheader starting at noon.
