Softball Picks up First Win of 2014 in Doubleheader Split

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lesley University softball team picked up their first win of the season this afternoon with a 10-2 win in six innings over Manhattanville College at the annual Dot Richardson Spring Games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The win came on the heels of a 10-8 loss to Bowdoin College in the first game of the afternoon.

Game One: Bowdoin 10, Lesley 8

Senior Nicole Mercurio (Wakefield, Mass.) put the Lynx on the board in the top of the first when she blasted her first home run of the season. Mercurio led the Lesley offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a home run two RBI and two runs scored.

The Polar Bears knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Katey Galey (Rehoboth, Mass.) singled home freshman Emily Griffin (Tucson, Ariz.) before Bowdoin added another run in the second to take a 2-1, edge.

Singles by senior Allison Fountain (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Mekenzi Golden (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and a walk from sophomore Angela Mukai (Amherst, N.H.) loaded the bases for the Lynx in the top of the third inning before junior Jodee Doka (Sacramento, Calif.) doubled to right field to bring in two runs. Sophomore Sydney Thayer (Reading, Mass.) brought home Lesley's third run of the inning as they Lynx regained a 4-2 lead.

The lead would not last long, however, as Bowdoin pushed five across the dish in the bottom of the inning. A Katie Kaufman (Arlington, Va.) bases-loaded single drove in Hanna Wurgaft (Montclair, N.J.) before Dimitria Spathakis (Medham, N.J.) drew a walk to drive in Bowdoin's second run of the inning. Junior Cielle Collins (New Castle, N.H.) delivered the big blow of the inning with a bases-clearing triple to cap the Polar Bears five run inning.

The Lynx would keep their offense in gear plating two more in the fourth and one more in the fifth, but once again, Bowdoin matched the production to keep the three run cushion.

Lesley tried to rally one more time in the sixth when sophomore Danielle McDonald (Lancaster, Pa.) singled in junior Abagail Roy (Sanbornton, N.H.), but Bowdoin reliever Melissa DellaTorre (Scarborough, Me.) stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout to escape the jam.

Sophomore Julia Geaumont (Saco, Me.) picked up her first win of the season for the Polar Bears while DellaTorre earned her first save of 2014 with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Golden, Doka, and McDonald each finished with two hits apiece for the Lynx. Doka added a team-high three RBI in the day's first game.

Game Two: Lesley 10, Manhattanville 2 (6 innings)

The Lesley bats continued to make some noise in the second game of the day, topping the Valiants 10-2 by mercy rule in six innings.

The Lynx wasted little time in pulling ahead, plating two in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Golden that scored fellow freshman Carlyn Barker (Marietta, Calif.) and Fountain.

Manhattanville cut the Lesley lead in half in the top of the second when freshman Melissa Iarocci (White Plains, N.Y.) singled home senior Kirsten Savage (Harrington, N.J.).

The Lynx answered back with a run in the bottom half of the third inning before pushing three runs across in the fourth. Consecutive singles from Sydney Thayer (Reading, Mass.), McDonald, and senior Sarah Apgar (Andover, N.J.) loaded the bases for Lesley in the fourth with one out. Barker earned an RBI when she drew a bases-loaded walk, before Mercurio knocked in two runs with a single to left field.

After a Thayer RBI single gave the Lynx a 7-2 edge, Lesley scored three more in the sixth to end the game by mercy rule. Mukai picked up two RBI with a single in the sixth before the Golden scored the game-ending run on a passed ball.

Golden went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI while Mercurio, Fountain, Mukai, Thayer, and McDonald each finished with two hits. As a team, Lesley registered a season-high 15 hits.

Freshman hurler Alyson Nisbet (Clovis, Calif.) picked up the first win of her young career, pitching a complete game yielding just six hits while striking out two.

The Lynx will wrap up their spring training trip tomorrow when they play in a doubleheader with Northwestern (Minn.) and Penn State-Behrend.
