Big Third Inning Powers Simmons Past Lynx

CLERMONT, Fla. – Simmons College sophomore Amanda Cordeiro (Fall River, Mass.) went six innings, giving up just two earned runs and striking out three batters to lead the Sharks over the Lynx, 11-3, in six innings. Sophomore Hannah Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) and senior Ari King (Westford, Mass.) powered the Simmons offense as they each had two hits and four RBI.

Senior Emily Mangiaratti (Amherst, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Lesley attack.

Lesley started the scoring in the top of the third as Maria Nazzaro (North Reading, Mass.) and Mangiaratti both reached on errors and junior Nicole Mercurio (Wakefield, Mass.) sent a double down the left field line, allowing both runners to score.

Simmons would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning as they slung together eight runs, capped by a Hannah Cunningham grand slam. King led off the inning with a walk before the Sharks loaded the bases with two singles by Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) and Alaine DeNoncour (Johnston, R.I.). Sophomore Jess Uschmann (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Cordeiro added two more singles, each knocking in a run, and scored another when Cailin Pagel (Dorchester, Mass.) reached on an error. Sophomore Jen Field (Windham, Me.) added yet another RBI base hit before Hannah Cunningham cleared the bases with a blast over the fence in right-center field.

The Sharks got another clutch hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth when Field cleared the bags with a two-out double to deep center field.

Uschmann finished with three hits while Cordeiro added two with two runs scored and an RBI.

This was the first game of the day for both teams. Simmons is scheduled to play Finlandia at 11:00a while Lesley is slated for a matchup with Rhode Island College at 1:00p.
