Stevenson Hangs on in 7th, Down Lynx

CLERMONT, Fla. – Stevenson University freshman Molly Hoyt (Parisppany, N.Y.) tossed five innings giving up just two runs en route to a 5-4 win over the Lynx tonight at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. Freshman Stephanie Shupe (Lakewood, Wash.) came in and closed out the last two innings for the Mustangs who improve to 3-1 on the year while the Lynx fall to 0-2.

The Mustangs got on the board first as freshman Kristen Mueller (Bel Air, Md.) led off the game with a walk and came in on a fielder's choice by classmate Kaitlyn Seger (Huntingtown, Md.).

They added two more in the second when junior Brianna Dieter (Gilbertsville, Pa.) scored on a single by freshman Tiffany Kahl (Glen Bernie, Md.) and Seger got her second RBI of the day when she drew a walk with the bases loaded.

The Lynx broke through in the bottom half of the inning when senior Molly Sarson (Sanford, Me) hit a double to left-center, allowing Nicole Mercurio (Wakefield, Mass.) to cross the plate, cutting the Mustangs lead to 3-1.

Holding a 5-2 lead in the seventh, the Lynx started to make a comeback. Lesley strung together five consecutive singles in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs, but stranded runners on second and third to end the game.

Freshman Jessica Morelli (Bristol, Conn.) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Stevenson, while Seger knocked in two runs while Mueller finished with an RBI and a run scored.

For the Lynx, Mercurio went 2-for-3 with two runs while tossing five innings allowing just four hits. Senior Jessica Guevara (Nantucket, Mass.) had two singles and scored a run.

Lesley returns to NTC tomorrow when they take on Simmons College at 9:00a and Rhode Island College at 1:00p. Stevenson will play a double-header against Marian (Ind.). Those games will be played at 9:00a and 11:00a also at NTC.
