Softball falls to Judges in extras, 10-9

WALTHAM, MA -- Jennifer Dorval homered and Emily Mangiaratti finished a homer short of the cycle, but Brandeis rallied for three in the sixth and won it with two in the eighth, 10-9.

Mangiaratti turned in her best performance of the season, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, four RBI's and a run scored. Dorval went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs, and Jodee Doka went 2-for-4, driving in a run.

The Lynx answered Brandeis' first-inning two-spot with two runs in the top of the second. Nicole Mercurio drew the dreaded leadoff walk and Dorval followed with a single. Freshman Doka, who celebrated the first two-hit game of her Lynx career, singled and scored Mercurio, and senior Jenna Fralick then doubled home Dorval to tie the game 2-2.

After the Judges broke the tie with a run in the bottom half of the inning, Brandies pitcher Caroline Miller helped her own cause with a two-run home run off Lesley starter Cassandra Knox in the third, knocking Knox from the game trailing 5-2.

Junior Mary Dembinski came on in relief of Knox, escaping the third with no further damage and shutting the Judges down in the fourth and the fifth before Lesley took the lead with a Mangiaratti bases-loaded triple. The Lynx designated player came around to beat the throw home to score on the play, putting the visitors up 8-5 midway through the sixth.

The lead wouldn't last, as after three scoreless innings, the Judges broke on through against Dembinski. Three RBI singles tied the game, sending the contest to extra innings, where the Lynx would strike first.

The speedy Maria Nazzaro started the eighth on second base and came around to score on a Jenna Fralick ground ball to short.  In the bottom of the inning, an Anya Kember groundout tied the game 9-9, and with the bases loaded, Brandeis won it when Dembinski drilled Melissa Nolan, scoring Marianne Specker to win it.

Lesley returns to play Thursday at Framingham State with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
