CLERMONT, FL – Lesley University earned its first win of 2011 with a 9-0 victory over Penn State-Behrend Sunday night at the 2011 Dot Richardson National Training Center.
Freshman starter Jennifer Dorval (Franklin, NH/Franklin) shut Penn State-Behrend down over five shutout innings, limiting the Lions to two hits and striking out eight in the Lynx 9-0 win. Emily Mangiaratti (Amherst, MA/Amherst) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Both pitchers opened their games with leadoff walks, with Mangiaratti coming around to score the Lynx first run of the season thanks to a pair of Behrend passed balls. With the bases loaded following two singles and a walk, freshman Molly Sarson (Sanford, ME/Sanford) plated fellow first-year Sarah Apgar (Andover, NJ/Lenape Valley) on a chopper fumbled by Lions shortstop Kelsey Fuller, giving the Lynx a 2-0 lead after one.
Maria Nazzaro's (North Reading, MA/St. Mary's) first college hit, an infield grounder to third, opened the Lynx second inning. The freshman promptly swiped second base, advanced on Jessica Guevara's second sacrifice bunt in as many innings, and scored on an Apgar single to left.
The next batter, Alyson Durben (Stow, MA/Nashoba), also singled to left, which scored Mangiaratti from third and Apgar from first after a Chloe Vernon error.
With a sizable cushion after the first two innings in her first collegiate start, Dorval responded with a proverbial shut-down inning. The freshman struck out the side in order, fanning Jenna Yourish, Vernon and Kessi Osbourne to keep the Lynx on top 5-0 through three.
Dorval, though, was just getting going. She fanned the side again the next inning, retiring Marissa Lisanti and Morgan Griffin before ringing up Fuller looking for her sixth straight strikeout.
Mangiaratti tripled to lead off the fourth, coming around to score on another Guevara bunt to make it a 6-0 game.
After two innings of dominance, Dorval pitched out of her first college jam in the fifth. A pair of one-out walks were followed by a bloop single on the infield from Vernon, loading the bases for Osborne. The Lions leadoff hitter bounded into a fielder's choice, as Guevara elected to throw home from second to hose Sam Grismore.
With shutout still intact, Dorval froze the Lions Marissa Lisanti, striking out the Behrend outfielder for the third time, this time escaping a one-out bases loaded jam unharmed.
Lesley scored three runs on four singles in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run Mangiaratti single that put the Lynx up 9-0, which would be the final.
The Lynx play another twin bill tomorrow in Clermont, taking on Elizabethtown at 1:30 and Monmouth (IL) at 3:30 p.m.
