Yellowjackets swarm Lynx in season opener

CLERMONT, FL – Reigning New England Collegiate Conference Champions Lesley University fell 10-0 to the University of Rochester in both teams' season openers Sunday afternoon at the Dot Richardson National Training Center in Clermont, FL.

Rochester jumped on the Lynx early, as Lindsay Macaluso (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart) singled to left to lead off the second inning, advancing to third on a ground out and passed ball. After a one-out walk, Macaluso was caught stealing home, thrown out by Sarah Apgar (Andover, NJ/Lenape Valley), who stepped in from short to cut off the double steal.

Two batters later, with runners on second and third, the Yellowjackets scored two runs on one passed ball, with Erin Clark (Mannsville, NY/Sandy Creek) and Samantha Melvin (Centerville, OH/Highland) scoring the game's first two runs. After RBI singles from Kristen Baldino (Baldwinsville, NY/Baker), who came around another wild pitch, and Cara Celorio (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), Rochester scored five runs on four hits and five passed balls.

Ahead 5-0 after two, Rochester starter Sara Hutchinson (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) cruised, and her offense also kept going. The Yellowjackets tacked on a pair of runs an inning later and three in the fourth, highlighted by an Elizabeth Slupinski (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) pinch-hit RBI double, going on to win 10-0 in five.

Hutchinson troubled Lesley hitters to a line of three hits, five strikeouts and no walks over her five-inning shutout.

Only two of Lynx starter Cassandra Knox's (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) 10 runs were earned, though last year's NECC Pitcher of the Year yielded eight hits and walked seven in the loss.

Lesley's opening day lineup featured five new faces from a year ago, four freshmen and a junior. First-year Allison Fountain (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) singled to right centerfield in her first college at-bat in the first, and fellow frosh Jennifer Dorval (Franklin, NH/Franklin) lined a single of second baseman Clark's glove into right field an inning later.

The Lynx (0-1) take on Penn State-Behrend today at 5 p.m. The Yellowjackets (1-0) play Medaille College at 3 p.m.
