Lesley and Wellesley split in NCAA Regionals rematch

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Nearly a year ago, the Lesley University and Wellesley College softball teams met at the NCAA Regional Tournament down in Providence, Rhode Island with the Blue defeating the Lynx 3-2.  These two teams met up again on Friday afternoon and split a double header with Lesley taking game one 3-2 and Wellesley winning game two 6-1.

Game One

Lesley opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning with a two-out rally.  Wellesley pitcher Barbarajean Grundlock (Blackwood, N.J.) struck out the first two batters but Lani Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, Mass.) kept the inning alive with a double to left centerfield.  Jenna Fralick (Woburn, Mass.) walked and Jodi Fralick (Woburn, Mass.) followed with a single to left, driving in Cabral-Pini.

Both Fralick sisters advanced to second and third base following a wild pitch by the pitcher.  Senior Sarah Wilson (Lowell, Mass.) then plated both runners with a single to give the Lynx a 3-0 lead.

The Blue came back in the bottom of the fourth as Wellesley trimmed the lead down to 3-2.  Alex Warren (Delta, British Columbia) doubled to deep left field off Alicia Burnett (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) to bring home two runners.

Burnett, however, slammed the door on the Blue, holding them scoreless through the final three innings of play.  The senior ace finished with 7.0 innings pitched, five hits, two runs, one walk, and seven strikeouts as she improved to 9-5 on the season.

Wellesley's Grundlock, took the loss as she gave up seven hits and three runs while fanning 13 batters in the complete game.

Game Two

In the second game of the day, Wellesley took an early lead in the second inning as first year pitcher Sarah Sherburne (Mill Valley, Calif.) helped her own cause with a two-run home run over the center field fence.

The Blue added four more runs to their total in the fifth inning on RBI singles from Amanda Tai (Melrose, Mass.), Ilana Orloff (Weston, Mass.), Alison Davis (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Megan Wood (Jacksonville, Fla.).

The Lynx would get a run back in the seventh inning with the help of a single by Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, Mass.) and a double by Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, N.Y.) that put runners in scoring position.   Saltzman, however, would get doubled up at third base on a heads up play on a caught line drive by the third baseman.  Lesley's Chelsea Quackenbush (East Hampton, Conn.) drove in the only run of the game for the Lynx with an RBI single in the inning.

Lesley will host Senior Day at Buckingham Field on Saturday, April 18 starting at 12:00 pm against Becker College.  Wellesley travels to Smith College on Saturday for a double header.
