Lesley sweeps conference opener

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Lesley University softball team kicked off New England Collegiate Conference play against Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon and swept both games against the Mountaineers.  With the victories, the Lynx evened their 2009 record at 5-5 (2-0 NECC) while Southern Vermont dropped to 0-4 (0-2 NECC) on the season.

Game One

In the first game of the double header, the Lynx beat the Mountaineers 13-0 behind a 4-for-4 day at the plate by Jodi Fralick (Woburn, Mass.).  Fralick was a home run shy of the cycle as the junior catcher hit two doubles, a triple, and a single.  Her success at the plate converted into four runs batted in and two runs scored.

Lesley's leadoff batter Lani Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, Mass.) did what she does best which is get on-base as the senior captain scored four times and stole four bases.

On the mound, Lynx ace Alicia Burnett (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) gave up just one hit in four innings of work.  Burnett struck out nine Mountaineer batters en route to winning her third game of the season.

At the bottom of the order, Jenna Fralick (Woburn, Mass.) reached base twice and crossed the plate both times.

Game Two

The Lesley bats continued to be hot in the second game of the double header as the Lynx crushed the Mountaineers 26-3.

Cabral-Pini showed her ability to get on-base once again as she went 4-for-5 with a double.  She scored four more runs, knocked in three runners, and stole another two bases to complete an overall impressive day.

Third baseman Sarah Wilson (Lowell, Mass.) recorded three singles in five trips to the plate while knocking in four runs batted in.  Fellow Lowell native Christina DiGiorgio (Lowell, Mass.) matched Wilson with the game high four runs batted in.

Outfielders Alyson Durben (Stow, Mass.) and Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, N.Y.) both had two hits and two RBIs in the game.  First baseman Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, Mass.) went 3-for-6 with three runs scored.  One of her three hits was a triple in the first inning.

Pitching for the Lynx were freshmen Cassandra Knox (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) and Stephanie Vassillion (Warner, N.H.) who combined to give up three hits and just one earned run in the complete game.

Lesley will be in action on Tuesday, April 1 at 3:30 pm as the team will visit Lasell College.
