Lynx leap over Terriers for first place in the NAC

WATERVILLE, Me. - The Lesley University softball team swept Thomas College in a doubleheader on Saturday and took over first place in the North Atlantic Conference with a record of 24-8 (16-2 NAC).  With the two losses, the Terriers dropped to 18-11 (15-3 NAC) and fell to third place in the conference.

Needing a sweep of Thomas and UMaine-Farmington this weekend to take sole possession of first place in the NAC, the Lynx defeated the Terriers 4-2 and 8-0 behind a solid pitching performance from Alicia Burnett (Gulf Breeze, Fla.).

In game one Burnett pitched seven innings while giving up two runs on four hits and a walk.  The junior struck out eight Terriers in the victory.

In the top of the first inning, Lani Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, Mass.) led things off with a double and then scored on an RBI single from Alyson Durben (Stow, Mass.).

Cabral-Pini would reach base again in the third inning and score when Jodi Fralick (Woburn, Mass.) knocked her in with a single to take the 2-0 lead.  In the bottom half of the inning, Thomas would get on the scoreboard to make it 2-1 after Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, Me.) singled to get on base.

The top of the order would get it done again for Lesley as Cabral-Pini singled in the fifth inning and stole second base to put herself in scoring position.  Durben doubled home the runner and would later score on a Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, Mass.) sacrifice fly to right field.

The Terriers would score in the seventh inning but the Lynx held on for 4-2 victory.

The second game saw another stellar outing from Burnett as she only had to pitch five innings to get the win.  She struck out five batters and gave up just three hits in the 8-0 shutout victory.

The Lynx scored early and often as they tallied three runs in the first inning and four runs in the third inning to put away the Terriers.

Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, N.Y.) and Saltzman both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.  Each player would double in the game to lead the offense.

Lesley next visits UMaine-Farmington on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.  Thomas will host Wheelock College starting at 1 p.m. in the final conference games before the NAC playoffs begin.
