Lesley remains undefeated in NAC; Wheelock swept

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Lesley University softball team continued their early season dominance of North Atlantic Conference opponents by sweeping Wheelock College on Sunday.  Both slaughter-rule victories improved Lesley's record to 8-6 (4-0 NAC) while Wheelock dropped to 2-8 (1-7 NAC).

In the first game, a 14-1 five-inning win for the Lynx, several players had multiple hits.  Causing the most damage was junior centerfielder Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, N.Y.) who went 4-for-4 from the plate with five RBI and three runs scored.  Her second inning triple drove in a run and her fourth inning double knocked home two more.

Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, Mass.) continued to hit well, getting three hits in four trips to the plate and lead off batter Lani Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, Mass.) had three hits of her own.  On the season, Cabral-Pini is reaching base an astonishing 60.4% of the time.

Other Lynx batters with multiple hits were Courtnie Leakeas (Lowell, Mass.), Christina DiGiorgio (Lowell, Mass.), and Alicia Pari (No. Providence, R.I.) who had two hits a piece.  Pari also scored twice, drove in two runners and stole a base.

On the mound, Christina Anzilotti (Pelham, N.Y.) pitched five solid innings in which the senior gave up just one earned run, four hits, two walks while striking out seven batters.  With the victory, Anzilotti improved her record to 2-2 on the season.

The second game ended with the same 14-1 result, but the offensive damage this time was done by Sarah Wilson (Lowell, Mass.) who in the fifth inning hit her first home run of the season.  The three-run blast added to her team-high 18 RBI on the season.

Freshman Jamie Goulart (Tiverton, R.I.) scored two runs and drew two walks in a solid performance at the plate.  Jodi Fralick (Woburn, Mass.) went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, raising her season batting average to .522.

Lesley ace Alicia Burnett (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) once again showed why she will be one the most dominating pitchers in the conference as she struck out nine batters in five innings of work.  The junior gave up just two hits and one run as she improved her 2008 record to 4-2 with 37 strikeouts in 36.2 innings pitched.

On Thursday April 10, the Lynx will take on non-conference opponent Newbury College at home starting at 3 p.m.
