Spring Training Day One

FT. MYERS, FL - Day 1 of spring training turned out to be a very successful one for the Lesley softball team as they won both of their games to start the season 2-0 for the first time ever.

The Lynx began their trip playing against Nazareth College.  Maureen Mikos (Fairfield, CT) started for the Lynx and pitched a complete game, striking out six, walking just one, and allowing zero earned runs.

Nazareth got on the board first as they scored a run in the first inning.  It took a while for the Lynx to get the rust off and get their offense going, but they were able to put it together before it was too late.  The Lynx struck in the fourth inning as they got two runs to jump ahead of Nazareth 2-1.  Nazareth would retake the lead in the top of the fifth inning as they got two more runs to jump out in front 3-2.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth the Lynx used their speed and creative style to take the lead once and for all.  With the bases loaded and two outs Jodi Fralick (Woburn, MA) laid down a beautiful suicide squeeze to tie the game up.  Lesley would then add two more runs en route to the 5-3 win.

Fralick led the Lynx offensively as she was 2-4 and batted in the game tying RBI.  Mikos helped herself out as she was 1-3 with a double and an RBI.  Christina DiGiorgio (Lowell, MA) also contributed going 1-2 with an RBI.

The Lynx seemed to show fatigue in the afternoon cap as they committed five errors but were able to overcome them as they pounded Skidmore pitching for eight runs.

Christina Anzilotti (Pelham, NY) got the win as she pitched three innings striking out four and allowing two earned runs.  Mikos came in for relief of Anzilotti and got her first save of the season as she pitched four innings, struck out two and allowed one earned run.

Skidmore jumped over Anzilotti early and got three runs in the first inning.  The Lynx refused to go that quietly and countered with a run in the first, three in the second and two in the third to go up by a score of 6-4.  Skidmore would grab another run in the fifth to pull within one but the Lynx put the game out of reach as they got two more in the sixth.  Mikos then took care of the Skidmore bats and Lesley closed out its second win of the day.

Fralick had another big game offensively for the Lynx as she scored two runs and added an RBI.  Gianna Spaziante (Hawthorne, NY) came to life as she drove in two RBI.  Katie Wilson (Kittery, ME) went 1-1 with an RBI, and Courtnie Leakeas (Lowell, MA) added and a run scored as she was 1-2 for the day.

Lesley faces New England College and Rutgers-Newark on day 2 of their spring training trip.  For more information on the Lesley women's softball team please go to their website.
