Sarah Wilson named Lesley's Athlete of the Year

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Sarah Wilson (Lowell, MA) was named the 2005-2006 Lesley University Athlete of the Year. Wilson, a freshman, was a two sport athlete during the 2005-2006 academic year, playing both soccer and softball. Wilson was brought on to the soccer team as backup goalie for star junior Sarah Wedge and despite seeing limited time in the field Wilson was the fourth leading scorer on the team.

Her primary sport is softball where she was nothing short of dominating during the 2006 season. Wilson had a truly remarkable season for the Lynx. What is most impressive about Wilson is that she was able to accomplish everything while battling ankle and back injuries all season. She toughed out the pain and was able to lead the lady Lynx in average (.440), hits (40), total bases (60), slugging percentage (.659), doubles (10), and homeruns (2). Wilson was also second on the team in on base percentage (.485), RBI’s (24), and triples (2). Wilson also made her mark in the conference. She was second in the conference in slugging percentage, 3rd in average, tied for fourth in RBI, fourth in doubles, and fifth in total bases. The North Atlantic Conference recognized all of this and honored Wilson as a member of the Second Team All-NAC. Wilson was able to get it done on the field as well at third basemen. She had the ability to completely change the game on defense by being able to take away the opponents ability bunt and hit down the line at the same time. Wilson continued to step up the entire year when her teammates needed her, and even when they did not need her she still stepped up.

Wilson’s Softball coach Jennifer Benway had this to say about her, “Softball is a passion of Sarah's and her performance and game sense on the field supports this claim. Her defense is like a brick wall, her arm is like a rocket and her hitting skills are phenomenal. Clearly, the game of softball comes naturally to her. Sarah's athleticism truly amazes me every day. Just when I think there's no way anyone can make that play, Sarah makes it look easy. I tease her and ask, "Are you serious about that play you just made!!!?" She replies with a grin on her face and says, “You haven't seen anything yet!" And it is that competitive spirit that allows Sarah to be a respected individual not only on the Lesley Softball Team, but a force to be reckoned with within the North Atlantic Conference."

Wilson helped lead her Lynx to the semifinals of the NAC Conference Tournament and to a fourth place finish, the best finish in school history. For her part Wilson was honored as team MVP and as the 2005-2006 Lesley University Athlete of the Year.
