CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University men's volleyball team fell to Endicott College, 3-0, and Southern Vermont College, 3-0, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action. Sophomore middle hitter John Gersbeck (Westerly, R.I.) led the Lynx notching seven kills and three total blocks on the afternoon.
Lesley drops to 1-18 on the season and 0-8 in conference play while Southern Vermont improves to 5-20 and 2-8 in the NECC. Endicott remains on top of the conference with an unblemished 11-0 conference record.
Match 1: Endicott 3, Lesley 0
In their first match of the day, Endicott set the tone early posting a .562 attack percentage in the first set to take the 1-0 match advantage. The Gulls did not look back as they were nearly perfect from the floor in game two, tallying 10 kills on 12 attempts with just one error before taking the match with the 25-6 win in the third set.
Gersbeck led the Lynx with two kills and a block assist while senior outside hitter Jason Hulteen (Galena, Ohio) posted two block assists against the Gulls. First year outside hitter Patrick Corcoran (West Hartford, Conn.) continued to improve his game registering a block of his own.
Match 2: Southern Vermont 3, Lesley 0
Southern Vermont jumped out to the quick 1-0 match lead taking the first set 25-13. But the Lynx were not going to back down. Trailing 5-3 early in the second set, senior outside hitter Mykael Tucker (Taunton, Mass.) capped off a mini 3-0 run to take a 6-5 lead.
The Mountaineers answered to tie up the game at six but Hulteen re-gained the lead with a kill to put the Lynx back on top 7-6. Over the next five points, the two teams exchanged the lead three times before Southern Vermont began to pull away. The Mountaineers went on a 6-1 run to take a 16-13 lead and they did not look back, taking the second set 25-15 to lead the match 2-0.
Lesley erased an early 0-3 hole in the third set after Corcoran capped off a 4-1 run with a kill to tie the score at four. But it was not enough to hold off a strong Mountaineer offense as they went on a 7-3 run to swing momentum over to their bench and take the third set, 25-16.
Corcoran and Gersbeck combined to record 10 kills notching five kills apiece to lead the Lynx. Junior setter Karuna Chiemruom (Cranston, R.I.) paced the offense with 11 assists while Hulteen led the defense with 12 defensive digs.
The Lynx return to the hard-court on Monday April 3rd when they host Regis College at 8:00 p.m.
